Update: Nasdaq Composite Reaches New High, 10-Year Yield Tops 5.3%

04:32 PM EDT, 10/05/2026 (MT Newswires) -- (Updates with market moves at the end of the day, and other changes, if any.) The Nasdaq Composite hit a new peak on Monday to lead Wall Street's advance, driven by certain technology giants, as the 10-year yield crossed the 5.3% mark. The tech-heavy index gained 1.1% to a fresh closing high of 27,477.31. The S&P 500 added 0.7% to settle at 7,773.95, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average edged up 0.2% to 51,267.90. Barring real estate, all sectors ended in the green, led by materials. Shares of tech giants Nvidia (NVDA) and Microsoft (MSFT) were among the top gainers on the Dow, up 2.1% and 1.5%, respectively. Alphabet's (GOOGL) class A shares also advanced. The 10-year Treasury yield was last up 3.4 basis points at 5.31%, having hit 5.349% earlier in the day. That was the highest level since April 3, 2002, CNBC reported. The two-year rate was little changed. "Treasury yields remain the principal near-term risk to stocks," Ivan Feinseth, chief market strategist at Tigress Financial Intelligence, said in a note. "Still, the fundamental backdrop remains supportive, with accelerating earnings growth, strong (artificial intelligence)-related capital investment, expanding semiconductor demand, increasing corporate buybacks and continued economic expansion." In economic news, growth in the US services sector decelerated sequentially in September, Institute for Supply Management data showed, while an S&P Global (SPGI) report pointed to the fastest expansion in more than five years, with both surveys indicating inflationary pressures. Last week, ISM and S&P surveys showed that the US manufacturing sector continued to expand last month amid robust demand and growth in employment, though inflationary pressures remained a key concern. West Texas Intermediate crude oil was down 2.1% at $89.22 a barrel in Monday late-afternoon trade, while Brent dropped 2% to $100.22. Oil flows in Saudi Arabia's East-West pipeline were operating normally, following media reports that it had suffered

Stocks Down Pre-Bell as Traders Await Fed Meeting Minutes

06:46 AM EDT, 10/05/2026 (MT Newswires) -- The benchmark US stock measures were pointing lower before the opening bell Monday as traders await minutes from the Federal Reserve's last policy meeting due later in the week. The S&P 500, the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the Nasdaq 100 fell 0.2% each in premarket activity. The Nasdaq finished Friday trading with weekly gains, while the Dow and S&P 500 recorded weekly losses. The Fed is scheduled to post minutes from its September policy meeting Wednesday, which will be assessed for fresh insight on the central bank's monetary policy. At that meeting, the central bank raised interest rates by 25 basis points, its first hike in just over three years, to combat inflation running persistently above its 2% target. Treasury yields trended downwards early Monday, with the two-year rate retreating 1.9 basis points to 4.81% and the 10-year rate off 1.3 basis points to 5.26%. Last week, official data showed the US economy added fewer jobs than expected last month, likely giving the Fed some breathing room to hold interest rates steady later in October. "While a still positive pace of job creation coupled with an upward revision to (second-quarter) growth signals an ongoing solid underlying economy, from a policy standpoint, a weaker-than-expected payroll report reinforces the Fed's more cautious approach to rate hikes," Stifel Economics said in remarks emailed to MT Newswires on Friday. Markets are currently pricing in an 80% probability that the Fed will keep its benchmark rate steady this month, with the remaining odds in favor of a 25-basis-point hike, according to the CME FedWatch tool. Monday's economic calendar has the purchasing managers' index composite final report from S&P Global (SPGI) for September at 9:45 am ET, followed by the Institute for Supply Management's services index for the same month at 10 am. West Texas Intermediate crude oil dipped 0.5% to $90.64 a barrel, while Brent inched lower at $102.25. Sources told Bloomberg News on Monday that oil flows in

US Equity Investors to Remain Focused on Treasury Yields Amid Light Macroeconomic, Corporate Calendar This Week

US Equity Investors to Remain Focused on Treasury Yields Amid Light Macroeconomic, Corporate Calendar This Week

06:07 AM EDT, 10/05/2026 (MT Newswires) -- US equity market investors will closely watch government bond yields, whose elevated levels are weighing on the stock market, as well as crude oil prices, in a week relatively light on macroeconomic data and earnings. * Last week on Friday, the 10-year government bond yield rose, trading close to its strongest level since 2002, and the 30-year also climbed, hovering near its loftiest level since 2002, even after September's nonfarm payrolls notably lagged the forecast, while July and August jobs were revised downward for a net reduction. The yields remained elevated even after the soft August personal consumption expenditures, or PCE, price index data, which is the Fed's preferred measure of inflation. * Investors will look out for the movement in Treasury yields, which seem to have remained firm amid a significant decline in market expectations for an interest-rate cut in October to about 22% on Friday last week from almost 70% earlier in the week, according to data compiled by the FedWatch tool. * A limited calendar this week will focus on ISM Services, the trade balance, claims, and University of Michigan consumer sentiment/inflation expectations, according to a note from Jefferies. * Crude oil prices were mixed early Monday after the Saudi Arabia-led military coalition said more than 300 "high value targets" have been hit in Yemen as allied ground forces battle the Houthis, according to a report from Al Jazeera, a Middle Eastern broadcaster. "We are providing air support to back the Yemeni armed forces on the ground around the clock," spokesman Major-General Turki al-Maliki said on the social media platform X, according to the news report. * Quarterly earnings due this week include Constellation Brands (STZ), Levi Strauss (LEVI), PepsiCo (PEP), and Delta Air Lines (DAL).

Wall St Week Ahead-Spiking bond yields, midterms, earnings to test US stocks' typical fourth-quarter strength

Wall St Week Ahead-Spiking bond yields, midterms, earnings to test US stocks' typical fourth-quarter strength

Repeats column first published on Friday Q4 tends to be strongest S&P 500 quarter, even stronger in midterm years Fed minutes on Wednesday could give rate hike clues PepsiCo, Delta to report results as Q3 reports begin By Lewis Krauskopf NEW YORK, Oct 2 (Reuters) - Investors head into a part of the calendar that tends to be upbeat for US stocks, but that seasonal strength is under threat from a number of challenges, including a surge in bond yields and the market's apparent dependence on massive AI spending. As the fourth quarter kicks off, the stock market is already on pace for a solid year. The benchmark S&P 500 .SPX as of Friday had gained nearly 13% in 2026, and sat about 1% below its mid-August record high. Markets face a busy end of 2026, with the start of corporate earnings season and a pivotal Federal Reserve meeting in coming weeks, along with the looming November 3 midterm elections that will decide control of the US Congress. "It does tend to be a seasonally strong period, however I think this year investors are facing some headwinds as we go into the fourth quarter," said Tracie McMillion, head of global asset allocation strategy at the Wells Fargo Investment Institute. Q4 TENDS TO SEE STOCK GAINS Since 1945, the S&P 500 averaged an increase of 4.2% in the fourth quarter, with the index posting gains 85% of the time, according to research firm CFRA. That average percentage rise is more than twice that of the other three quarters. Fourth quarters of midterm years have generally been even stronger, with an average gain of 6.4%, as stocks "benefit from the lifting of election uncertainty," Sam Stovall, chief investment strategist at CFRA, said in a note. While fourth quarters tend to shine, mid-term years overall historically have been subpar, a trend stocks have defied so far in 2026. The S&P 500 has averaged a 15% dip in midterm years historically, while the deepest drop so far this year has only been 9%, according to McMillion of the Wells Fargo institute. The firm is on "high alert" for a pullback b
