US Equity Futures Mostly Flat Pre-Bell as Soft Jobs Data Reduces Fed Rate Hike Expectations
MT newswire2026/10/05 12:0208:02 AM EDT, 10/05/2026 (MT Newswires) -- US equity futures were mostly flat pre-bell Monday as lower-than-expected jobs data on Friday reduced expectations for a Federal Reserve interest hike this month. Dow Jones Industrial Average futures and S&P 500 futures were flat, and Nasdaq futures were 0.2% lower. Total nonfarm payrolls rose by 29,000 last month, the Bureau of Labor Statistics said Friday, well below the 90,000 increase projected in a Bloomberg-compiled survey. Markets are pricing in an 80.6% probability that the Federal Open Market Committee will leave its benchmark lending rate unchanged toward the end of this month, up from 76% on Thursday, according to the CME FedWatch tool. Traders look forward this week to the Wednesday release of minutes of the Federal Reserve's mid-September policy session for insights on the central bank's thinking. Expected to report their financial results this week are PepsiCo (PEP) and Delta Air Lines (DAL). Oil prices were mixed, with front-month global benchmark North Sea Brent crude up 0.2% at $102.42 per barrel and US West Texas Intermediate crude 1.2% lower at $89.99 per barrel. The S&P Global purchasing managers' index composite final report for August is due at 9:45 am ET, followed by ISM's services data at 10:00 am ET.

State Street Global Advisors: Insufficient Reason to Extend Duration Amid Upward Yield Pressure
Strategists at State Street Global Advisors stated that the yield curve may not be as attractive as it appears on the surface. In a report, they remarked: "If we are indeed entering a market environment more similar to that of the 2000s, it is notable that the current yield curve does not seem particularly steep." They pointed out that if the market starts to price in a higher term premium, yields may face further upward pressure. In their view, the rise in government bond yields is one of the most significant developments in the fixed income market in recent years. They stated: "Nevertheless, although bond yields have become more attractive, we do not believe that the case for extending duration has become significantly more compelling."
Pakistan says soaring oil prices may accelerate the achievement of electric vehicle targets
A senior Pakistani government official stated that, as oil prices soar and the appeal of gasoline-powered vehicles drops, Pakistan is expected to achieve its electric vehicle adoption targets ahead of schedule. According to policies announced last year, the government's goal is for electric vehicles to account for 30% of new car sales by 2030. Haroon Akhtar, Advisor to the Prime Minister on Industry and Production, said the rise in fuel costs since the Middle Eastern conflict has shortened the time required for consumers to recoup the higher upfront costs of electric vehicles. He stated: "I believe the goals set in our electric vehicle policy last year will be achieved sooner, as the surge in oil prices has reduced the payback period for electric vehicles to one to one and a half years. People are starting to realize the benefits now, namely that they no longer have to pay for gasoline."
