UK net mortgage borrowing rose to 4.4 billion pounds in August

⑴ In August 2026, UK net individual mortgage lending rose to £4.4 billion, up from a revised £4.1 billion in July, but below the six-month average of £5.2 billion. ⑵ The annual growth rate of net mortgage lending remained steady at 3.6%. ⑶ In August, total secured lending fell to £23.6 billion from July’s £25.3 billion, below the six-month average of £26.5 billion; repayments dropped from £21.1 billion to £20.4 billion. ⑷ Meanwhile, the effective interest rate on newly issued mortgages increased from 4.45% to 4.60%, while the outstanding stock rate rose slightly from 3.97% to 4.00%.
