The US Dollar Is Falling, But Bitcoin Isn’t Rallying: Why BTC Price Is Ignoring Dollar Weakness

CoinEditionCoinEdition2026/10/16 15:27

The U.S. dollar weakened on Friday, but Bitcoin struggled to extend its recovery, remaining below $84,000 after Thursday’s sell-off and trading in the $82,000-$83,000 range. Inflation concerns, uncertainty over Federal Reserve policy and uneven crypto demand have left the currency move insufficient to produce a sustained rally.

A weaker dollar can support Bitcoin when it accompanies easier financial conditions. However, DXY tracks the dollar against six foreign currencies; it does not directly measure money available for investment.

The Dollar Index, or DXY, fell 0.35% to 101.70, heading for a roughly 0.55% weekly decline. Yet, the dollar’s weakness has not translated into a sustained Bitcoin recovery.

That change is key since this week’s dollar decline has coincided with concerns over artificial intelligence investments and selling in technology shares. Currency weakness has therefore accompanied pressure on risk appetite. Bitcoin’s parallel decline with AI stocks highlighted its sensitivity to broader financial uncertainty.

Although expectations for an immediate hike later eased, the Federal Reserve’s October 27–28 meeting remains a checkpoint. Lower DXY readings have not removed uncertainty about borrowing costs.

Demand data also show why currency weakness alone has struggled to lift prices. U.S. spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds registered $261.4 million in net outflows on October 14, according to Farside Investors.

The following session brought just $5.1 million in net inflows, leaving the recovery in institutional demand modest compared with the preceding withdrawals. Bitcoin’s near-term recovery will depend on whether renewed institutional demand can offset persistent concerns about inflation and the Fed’s interest rate path.

The technical outlook places immediate support around $80,000-$81,000, with the 20-day exponential moving average near $82,800 marking an initial recovery hurdle. Sustained trading above that average, accompanied by stronger spot buying and steadier technology shares, would support a move toward the $84,000-$85,000 supply zone.

Conversely, renewed selling and a break below $80,000 would weaken the rebound and expose the $78,000 area. A falling dollar would offer limited protection if institutional withdrawals and broader risk aversion persisted.
