- International Monetary Fund releases its European Regional Economic Outlook report, raising the eurozone's 2026 GDP growth forecast to 1.0%. The report states that the eurozone has successfully withstood geopolitical shocks, but its potential economic growth remains weak, and it will enter a phase of subdued growth in the medium to long term.
- There is a clear divergence in economic performance within the eurozone. Spain's 2026 GDP growth forecast is raised to 2.4%, significantly higher than core economies such as Germany, France, and Italy. Germany is forecast at 1.2%, France at 0.3%, and Italy at 0.7%.
- The report points out that the eurozone is weighed down by slow productivity gains, insufficient single market efficiency, and sluggish progress on structural reforms, leading to a potential regional economic growth rate of only 1.0%. External shocks could amplify downward economic pressures, and volatility in energy and supply chains can easily dampen growth expectations.
- Inflation has rebounded due to the Middle East conflict and extreme summer weather. IMF has raised the eurozone's overall inflation forecast for 2026 to 3.0%, and for 2027 to 2.7%, with inflation expected to approach the European Central Bank’s target level only by 2028. Core inflation trends remain relatively stable.
- Europe’s growth shortfall stems from insufficient digitalization and AI technology adoption, obstacles to large-scale corporate expansion, fragmented capital markets, and high energy costs, compounded by an aging population. Over the coming decades, continual increases in spending on pensions, defense, and green transition will constrain countries’ strategic investment capabilities.
