I. Hot News Highlights

US Inflation | September PPI Rises 1.3% as Cost Pressure Builds

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported on October 15 that September final-demand PPI rose 1.3% month on month and 6.3% year on year. Excluding food, energy and trade services, prices increased 0.5% and 5.0%, respectively. Price pressure extended across goods and services.

Market Impact: Higher producer prices increase pressure on companies to absorb costs or pass them to customers. A single day’s bond rally offers limited evidence of easier policy ahead. Watch the transmission to consumer prices and companies’ ability to maintain margins.

US Consumption | September Retail Sales Rise 0.8%

The Census Bureau reported September retail and food-services sales of approximately $745.0 billion, up 0.8% month on month and 6.3% year on year. These figures are not adjusted for price changes and therefore do not directly measure growth in real consumption volumes.

Market Impact: Higher spending supports corporate revenue, while persistent inflation complicates the policy trade-off. Retailers’ sales volumes, discounting and earnings guidance will help distinguish demand growth from price effects.

Global Energy | US Crude Draw Accompanies Diverging Benchmarks

US commercial crude inventories fell by 8.6 million barrels in the week ended October 9. On October 15, November WTI settled 3.03% higher at $97.97 a barrel, while December Brent declined 0.13% to $105.92.

Market Impact: Inventory draws support US crude, while shipping capacity, Gulf transport risks and expectations for recovering supply affect regional prices differently. Watch whether inventory declines persist and freight costs continue to influence regional spreads.

II. Market Review

Commodities and Foreign Exchange

Asset Reference Price Basis
Spot gold $4,153.42/oz Intraday at 02:01 Beijing time, October 16; approximately +1.2%
Spot silver $57.05/oz October 15 US-session quote; approximately +2.5%
WTI crude $97.97/barrel November futures, October 15 settlement; +3.03%
Brent crude $105.92/barrel December futures, October 15 settlement; -0.13%
US Dollar Index, DXY Approximately 102.06 09:01 Beijing time, October 16
US 10-year Treasury yield Approximately 5.064% October 15 US-session quote

Precious metals recovered alongside lower Treasury yields, while inflation data remained strong. Cross-asset positioning requires distinguishing a short-term recovery from a sustained decline in interest rates. Oil also requires separate monitoring of inventories, transport and regional supply and demand.

Cryptocurrency Performance

BTC: Approximately 82,326.50 USDT, up 0.73% over 24 hours. ETH: Approximately 2,438.68 USDT, up 0.85% over 24 hours. Total crypto market capitalization: Approximately $2.78 trillion, down 2.01% over 24 hours; independently updated at 09:11 Beijing time on October 16.

BTC | Liquidation Zones

A relatively prominent potential short-liquidation cluster lies around $83,000–$83,400, approximately 0.92%–1.40% above the current price. A potential long-liquidation cluster lies around $81,300–$81,800, approximately 0.54%–1.15% below. The lower cluster is closer; a retreat into that area could increase volatility associated with leveraged longs being unwound.

ETH | Liquidation Zones

A relatively prominent potential short-liquidation cluster lies around $2,465–$2,490, approximately 1.18%–2.20% above the current price. A potential long-liquidation cluster lies around $2,380–$2,425, approximately 0.47%–2.31% below. The lower boundary is closer. Watch potential long-liquidation pressure near $2,425 and short-covering risk if price approaches $2,465.

Institutional Cost Basis | BTC

Glassnode’s October 14 report put the estimated aggregate US spot BTC ETF cost basis near $81,500; BTC is approximately 0.92% above that reference. Strategy’s October 12 disclosure showed 848,250 BTC held as of October 11 at an aggregate average cost of approximately $75,444, including fees and expenses. BTC is approximately 9.02% above that cost. These are reference price differences relative to BTC acquisition costs.

Market Takeaway

BTC’s potential long-liquidation zone at $81,300–$81,800 encompasses the approximately $81,500 ETF cost reference. A retreat into this area warrants monitoring both leverage reduction and narrowing reference gains. Above price, watch $83,000–$83,400. For ETH, focus first on price reactions near $2,425 and $2,465.

Major US Equity Indices

Index Close Change
Dow Jones Industrial Average 52,177.69 +1.08%
S&P 500 7,744.06 +0.33%
Nasdaq Composite 26,713.03 +0.08%

All three benchmarks advanced, with the Dow clearly leading and the Nasdaq finishing almost flat. The index recovery coexisted with further declines in some technology stocks, indicating an uneven rebound.

Magnificent Seven

Company Ticker Close, USD Change
Nvidia NVDA 217.23 -1.84%
Apple AAPL 342.00 -0.28%
Microsoft MSFT 539.44 +1.08%
Alphabet GOOGL 349.22 +0.45%
Amazon AMZN 254.76 +0.27%
Meta META 736.72 -0.11%
Tesla TSLA 362.44 -1.29%

The group recorded three gainers and four decliners. Microsoft led gains, while Nvidia and Tesla posted the larger declines. A coordinated megacap recovery has yet to emerge; earnings delivery and returns on capital spending remain company-specific considerations.

Sector Moves

Healthcare: Eli Lilly gained 3.55% and UnitedHealth rose 2.79%, alongside Deutsche Bank rating upgrades for both companies. Their performance diverged from weaker parts of technology. Watch whether earnings guidance continues to provide support.

Semiconductors: TSMC ADRs fell 1.80% and Nvidia declined 1.84%. TSMC’s earnings growth coincided with a weaker share price. Sector assessment requires considering results, expectations and valuation together; one earnings release alone offers limited guidance on the entire supply chain’s trading direction.

Commercial Space: Rocket Lab fell 6.64%. Neutron’s first flight moving into 2027 renewed attention on technical validation and the timing of revenue delivery.

III. In-Depth US Equity Analysis

TSMC (TSM) | Strong Profit Growth Meets a Cautious Share-Price Response

Event Overview: On October 15, TSMC reported third-quarter dollar revenue of $46.72 billion, up 41.2% year on year, and net income of NT$763.06 billion, up 68.7%. Gross margin was 66.4%. Fourth-quarter dollar revenue guidance was $52.3–$54.3 billion. Its ADRs closed at $422.25, down 1.80%.

Market Interpretation: Results and guidance provide tangible evidence of chip-manufacturing demand, while growth figures and the share-price response diverged. The growth already reflected in expectations and the sustainability of future earnings also matter for valuation.

Investment Implications: Track fourth-quarter revenue against guidance, advanced-node demand and the durability of high margins. Evaluating business growth separately from valuation changes helps explain volatility after earnings.

Charles Schwab (SCHW) | Client Assets Grow as Valuation Faces Further Scrutiny

Event Overview: On October 15, Schwab reported approximately $7.2 billion in third-quarter revenue, up 17%, and adjusted EPS of $1.69. Quarterly core net new assets reached $190.4 billion, up 38%, while total client assets stood at approximately $13.33 trillion. Shares closed at $94.16, down 2.73%.

Market Interpretation: New assets expand the potential base for fee and interest income, while client allocations, deposit costs and yields influence conversion into profit. Financial growth and a falling share price can coexist; the price move alone does not establish operational deterioration.

Investment Implications: Monitor asset retention, client cash allocations and net interest income, together with the conversion of asset growth into sustained EPS growth.

Rocket Lab (RKLB) | Neutron Delay Puts Delivery Timing in Focus

Event Overview: In an October 14 investor update, Rocket Lab moved Neutron’s first flight into 2027 without providing a new specific launch date. Manufacturing-process corrections and further testing remain necessary. Shares closed October 15 at $55.25, down 6.64%.

Market Interpretation: The delay extends the validation and revenue timeline for the medium-lift launch business. Demand must be converted into revenue through reliable launch capability, while schedule changes also affect assessments of cash consumption.

Investment Implications: Track first-stage structural testing, progress through the full testing program and a revised launch schedule. Also monitor whether existing business cash flow and available funding cover the development period.

IV. Market & Project Updates

  1. Ripple Prime launches institutional RWA perpetual swaps. Its October 15 announcement covered more than 100 reference markets across equities, indices, ETFs, metals, energy and FX, with 24/7 trading and settlement. The swaps reference Trade.xyz perpetual futures on Hyperliquid and can accept RLUSD collateral, subject to jurisdictional availability. This expands channels for continuous management of traditional-asset exposure.

  2. Starknet opens a non-binding poll on an independent L1 direction. The seven-day vote launched on October 15 asks whether to research an independent post-quantum L1 further. A favorable result would initiateate research and subsequent proposals rather than approve a migration. STRK would remain the token, with no new token proposed.

  3. Network School acquires Farcaster. Neynar co-founder Rish announced on October 15 the transfer of the Farcaster app, protocol repositories and related products to Network School. Most team members will continue development. Watch changes to the operating model and retention of developers and users.

  4. DeFi Development increases CHAD’s dividend rate. The company announced on October 15 that the preferred stock’s annual dividend rate will rise from 13% to 14%, effective November 2. Based on its $10 stated amount, annual dividends increase from $1.30 to $1.40 per share, subject to board declaration. Future issuance proceeds are intended to expand its SOL treasury; monitor the relationship between funding costs and treasury returns.

  5. Canaan reports mining and heat-recovery progress. Its October 15 release showed September production of 44 BTC and month-end holdings of 1,875 BTC. An 8 MW Nordic district-heating project is fully operational, using computing heat to serve approximately 2,800 homes. The update provides evidence on both treasury size and energy utilization.

V. Today’s Market Calendar

Beijing Time Region Event Attention
October 16, 20:30 US September Import and Export Price Indexes ★★★
October 16, 21:15 US September Industrial Production and Capacity Utilization ★★★

Key Event Preview: Import and export prices provide further evidence on external cost pressures, while industrial production offers a supply-side view of the real economy. Continued price pressure alongside resilient output could constrain expectations of easier policy. Weaker output would require reassessing earnings-growth expectations.

Institutional View: On October 15, Argent Capital Management portfolio manager Jed Ellerbroek highlighted the effect of rising financing costs on housing and data-center construction, alongside interest in defensive, noncyclical businesses. AI investment assessment should therefore include funding costs and the ability to recover invested cash.

Waller’s series of speeches at the IMF reinforced the view that cutting-edge AI technology will fundamentally reshape the economy in the long term, but he did not commit to a pause in rate hikes in October. For global semiconductor stocks, which have recently experienced heavy sell-offs and entered a correction phase, the positive aspect is that he did not further intensify short-term rate hike expectations.

Earnings season is here! Citadel Securities: The next few weeks will be the real stress test for U.S. stock fundamentals

The US stock market enters Q3 earnings season, with market expectations for S&P 500 earnings per share to grow 27% year-over-year, marking the third highest threshold ahead of earnings seasons since 2010. However, the growth is highly concentrated—Micron and Nvidia alone contribute 36% of expected gains. Retail investors’ weekly net buying surged to $9.1 billion, with semiconductor purchases reaching a historic peak. Citadel Securities warns that index volatility has fallen to its calmest range in nearly 30 years, while individual stock risks are quietly rising, making stock picking preferable to simply increasing index allocations.

Dangerous signal? CoreWeave founders cash out $3.3 billion after IPO

The founder's sell-off objectively avoided a 60% drop in share price, and some have already liquidated nearly 40% of their wealth. Behind this stark contrast, the company is burdened with a massive $52 billion debt, with a five-year default probability exceeding 60%. The current debt stands at $52 billion, and the cumulative negative free cash flow for 2026-2028 is projected to reach $71 billion. Its model of "borrowing at 9% interest to earn a 1% return" has been harshly criticized as the "subprime crisis" of the AI industry. The high-leverage computing power financing game is now facing the market's ultimate test.
