1.OpenAI annualized revenue below the market figure
The Financial Times reported first, and CNBC confirmed: OpenAI told investors annualized revenue was about $50 billion at the end of September, below the roughly $68 billion figure circulated last month. The higher figure included gross revenue from partners. Third-quarter growth was about 77%, and enterprise growth about 107%. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index fell 3.39%. The Nasdaq closed down 1.25% at 27,193.34, the S&P 500 fell 0.47% to 7,765.36, and the Dow rose 0.10% to 51,231.64.
🎯 Names: NVDA, ORCL, CRWV, AVGO, AMD, MU. Catalyst: Valuation and AI capex-return expectations are being repriced. NVDA fell about 3%, ORCL nearly 6%, and CRWV closed down 7.77%.
2. Middle East risk and a hurricane lift oil; energy outperforms
CNBC: Brent settled at $104.28, up 4%. WTI settled at $91.49, up 3.6%. Tankers were attacked around Hormuz over the past week, and Hurricane Isaias shut in about 500,000 barrels a day, roughly 25% of Gulf of Mexico output. Trump said the US would not strike Iran before the November midterms, and oil came off the session high. Energy led, while technology fell 1.78%.
🎯 Names: XOM, CVX. Catalyst: The geopolitical premium and supply disruption remain. Watch how much oil gives back after Trump’s comments.
3. Apple sets the October 13 “Welcome home” event
Apple confirmed on Thursday an October 13 launch tagged “Welcome home,” with a media experience in New York and an official focus on smart-home products. A home hub, a new Apple TV, and a HomePod mini remain market expectations, not a confirmed lineup. AAPL rose 1.11% against the tape to $340.42.
🎯 Name: AAPL. Catalyst: The event countdown is on. The home-hardware narrative is offsetting selling in the AI complex.
4. Nvidia pledges $1 billion of value to US science over five years
On October 8, Nvidia said it will commit $1 billion of value over five years to US superintelligence research, covering quantum computing, healthcare, and energy security. The plan supports universities, quantum programs, and cloud providers serving government needs, and ties into the Genesis Mission. The wording is a value commitment, not cash already spent. NVDA still fell about 2.9%–3% the same day. 🎯 Name: NVDA. Catalyst: The quantum and national-lab computing story is now official, but the stock remains capped by the OpenAI revenue figure.
5. Wolfspeed gets a conditional Defense loan of up to $1.5 billion
The US Department of Defense gave Wolfspeed a conditional loan commitment of up to $1.5 billion over 30 years for domestic silicon-carbide and gallium-nitride materials and power devices, covering defense, AI, and critical infrastructure. The loan still needs due diligence, approvals, and appropriations. The company would also issue warrants for up to about 7.5% of fully diluted equity as tranches are funded.
🎯 Name: WOLF. Catalyst: Wide-bandgap reshoring has a policy-funding signal. Dilution and closing conditions are the pricing keys.
6. Intel says it stays in Terafab; chips still sold off
Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan told Bloomberg, ahead of a Tokyo event, that the company will keep working on Elon Musk’s Terafab, a project tied to Tesla, SpaceX, and xAI. INTC still fell about 5% on Thursday. TSMC’s September revenue was NT$511.86 billion, up 54.6% year over year and down 0.6% month over month. It was not a monthly record.
🎯 Names: INTC, TSM. Catalyst: The advanced-capacity and supply-chain story is intact, but near-term trading still tracks SOX and Treasury yields.
Trading note: Futures were broadly steady overnight, with money rotating from high-valuation AI names into energy. Watch for an oversold chip bounce after the OpenAI revenue gap, and for how much oil retraces after Trump’s comments. This is event-driven. Keep position size in check.
