The XRP Ledger, the decentralized blockchain network behind the XRP cryptocurrency, was launched with a fixed supply of 100 billion XRP. No additional coins can ever enter circulation, making XRP’s total supply permanently capped.
AI-driven transactions could burn 100 million XRP per trillion on XRPL
Fee-burning mechanism and transaction dynamics
On X, crypto analyst Pumpius detailed the implications of XRP’s immutable supply as the network experiences rising demand, particularly driven by artificial intelligence agents. Each transaction on the XRP Ledger requires a fee, and this fee is not recycled. Instead, it is irrevocably destroyed, or “burned,” reducing the total supply of XRP over time.
The minimum fee for a transaction on XRPL is 10 drops—the smallest unit of XRP. Under periods of high network activity, fees can be set as high as 100 drops per transaction. Pumpius calculated that if transaction fees remain at this elevated level, one trillion transactions would permanently remove 100 million XRP from circulation. Once burned, these coins do not return to the supply.
At high-load levels, every trillion transactions requiring 100 drops per transaction results in 100 million XRP destroyed—an amount permanently removed from the ledger’s total supply.
AI agents and the growth of XRP payments
Artificial intelligence agents are increasingly active on the XRP Ledger. Over the past three months, AI-driven payments processed through the x402 protocol hit 10.8 million transactions, after crossing the initial 1 million mark in a short period. Daily averages now reach 500,000 payments handled by more than 2,000 live services and APIs.
These AI agents autonomously settle payments for tasks like data queries, inference, and access to financial APIs, using XRP or RLUSD, without human involvement. Pumpius emphasized that such activity is relentless and continuous, as “AI agents do not sleep. Institutional settlement does not wait for business hours.” Sustained transaction volume from AI participants could compound the impact of the burn mechanism more quickly than traditional users.

Ripple sets ambitious targets for AI transactions
Monica Long, president of Ripple—the company developing enterprise solutions for the XRP Ledger—projected a massive increase in AI activity. Speaking at XRPL Seoul 2026, she predicted that AI agent transactions on the ledger could reach 100 million, a tenfold jump from the current 11 million. Long expressed optimism about XRP’s growth prospects due to the momentum generated by AI-related use cases.
Long expects AI agent transactions on the XRP Ledger to reach 100 million soon, driven by autonomous activity that never pauses.
A tenfold increase in network activity could significantly accelerate XRP’s burn rate. Should the ledger process 10 trillion AI transactions at a rate of 100 drops per transaction, the result would be 1 billion XRP burned. With the maximum possible supply fixed at 100 billion and no way to replenish it, such a pace could noticeably decrease the total available XRP in a matter of years.

Tokenization and the future of supply constraints
Pumpius highlighted that, unlike traditional fiat or inflationary cryptocurrencies, XRP’s supply cannot expand to meet new demand. As the ledger begins to host more tokenized real-world assets, the issue of a shrinking supply may gain prominence alongside surging AI-driven payment volumes.
Long also forecast significant growth in the value of tokenized assets managed by XRPL. She predicted that tokenized real-world assets on the ledger will climb from $100 million at the start of 2025 to $6 billion, and by 2027 could reach $30 billion.
Mini dictionary: Tokenized real-world assets are tangible or financial assets, such as real estate, stocks, or commodities, represented digitally and traded on a blockchain for greater liquidity and transferability.
Adoption rates alter the fundamentals
The notion of 100 billion XRP once seemed vast, but the landscape could change if adoption accelerates. Pumpius explained that the significance of the finite supply becomes obvious when real-world and AI-driven applications push transaction volumes into the trillions, amplifying the effect of fee burning on XRP’s scarcity.

Unlike chatbots with a high idle rate, the “always online” nature of intelligent agents like Meta Muse leads to a dramatic increase in computing power consumption. Citi predicts that this trend will shift the CPU-GPU ratio from 1:8 during the training phase to 1:1, driving the CPU market to reach $300 billion by 2030. Meanwhile, just 100 million daily active Muse users could generate up to $19 billion in GPU revenue for Nvidia.
