Telus Completes First Smartphone-to-Satellite Test on Its Wireless Network
MT newswire2026/10/05 15:1211:12 AM EDT, 10/05/2026 (MT Newswires) -- Telus (T.TO) completed its first test that hooked up its wireless network with AST SpaceMobile's satellite network, the company said on Monday. The development is a major step in enabling users to access broadband data services, make voice calls, and send text messages directly between eligible smartphones and satellites, a statement said. The service is expected to be available to Telus customers within the next year. "Connecting smartphones directly to satellites is opening up new possibilities for how Canadians stay connected," said Nazim Benhadid, Telus' chief technology officer. "This successful milestone with AST SpaceMobile is a major step forward in extending cellular coverage to places where service isn't available today, reinforcing our commitment to bringing reliable service to more Canadians, no matter where they are."
