Dollar Strengthens as Investors Look for Safety -- WSJ

Supporting the greenback is a selloff in the euro: Markets are fretting about France's financial health, after new figures last week highlighted its ballooning public debt. French government bond yields have climbed to their highest levels since 2002, knocking the euro overall. France's stock market index also fell 1% Monday. In Brazil, stocks jumped and the real is rallying more than 4% against the dollar after a first-round victory last night by Flávio Bolsonaro against President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. U.S. stocks have opened mixed, with the Dow industrials edging lower while the Nasdaq gained modestly. Treasury yields are creeping higher again, with the 10-year's at 5.307%, about 0.04 percentage point below recent multidecade highs. Oil prices are little changed following an agreement Friday by G-7 countries to release crude and diesel reserves. Investors are flocking to safety, helping push the dollar close to an almost 18-month peak against a basket of currencies.

Supporting the greenback is a selloff in the euro: Markets are fretting about France's financial health, after new figures last week highlighted its ballooning public debt. French government bond yields have climbed to their highest levels since 2002, knocking the euro overall. France's stock market index also fell 1% Monday.

In Brazil, stocks jumped and the real is rallying more than 4% against the dollar after a first-round victory last night by Flávio Bolsonaro against President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

U.S. stocks have opened mixed, with the Dow industrials edging lower while the Nasdaq gained modestly. Treasury yields are creeping higher again, with the 10-year's at 5.307%, about 0.04 percentage point below recent multidecade highs.

Oil prices are little changed following an agreement Friday by G-7 countries to release crude and diesel reserves.
