Easing Bond Yields, Relatively Steady Oil Prices Churn European Bourses Midday
MT newswire2026/10/05 11:5907:59 AM EDT, 10/05/2026 (MT Newswires) -- European bourses outside of Paris tracked moderately higher midday Monday as traders weighed easing bond yields and relatively steady oil prices against the backdrop of political turmoil in France and Spain. French sovereign 10-year bond yields again wavered near 5%, and the CAC 40 Index in Paris fell 1% amid concerns regarding the country's mounting debt burden and perceived political gridlock ahead of the 2027 presidential election. Meanwhile, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez called for a snap election, triggered in part by unrest over housing costs. The pan-continental Stoxx Europe 600 Index was up 0.3% mid-session, led by higher food and oil stocks. Front-month North Sea Brent crude-oil futures were up 0.3%, near $102.50 a barrel, in mid-session trades. Investors also eyed Wall Street futures in the red amid higher closes overnight on Asian exchanges. In economic news, the producer price index in both the eurozone and the broader EU rose by 1.9% month over month in August, Eurostat reported. Year over year, the index was up 8.2% in the euro area and by 8% in the EU. In the sectors, the Stoxx Europe 600 Technology Index was up 0.2%, and the Stoxx 600 Banks Index gained 0.4% mid-session. The Stoxx Europe 600 Oil and Gas Index rose 0.7%, while the Stoxx 600 Europe Food and Beverage Index advanced 0.8%. The REITE, a European REIT index, rose 0.8%. On the national market indexes, Germany's DAX was nearly flat, and the FTSE 100 in London gained 0.5%. Spain's IBEX 35 increased 0.4%. Yields on benchmark 10-year German bonds were lower, near 3.45%. The Euro Stoxx 50 volatility index was up 4.2% at 20.11, indicating modestly above-average volatility for European stock markets in the next 30 days, a negative signal. A reading above 20 indicates choppier markets ahead, while below 20 suggests calmer exchanges.
