Bond Yields, Politics Damp Wall Street Pre-Bell; Asia Up, Europe Mixed

MT newswireMT newswire2026/10/05 11:17

07:17 AM EDT, 10/05/2026 (MT Newswires) -- Wall Street futures pointed modestly lower pre-bell Monday as traders weighed global bond yields, European political turmoil, and oil prices. French sovereign bond yields again rose on concerns regarding the nation's mounting debt burden, and perceived political gridlock ahead of the 2027 presidential election. Meanwhile, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez called for a snap election, triggered in part by unrest over housing costs. In the futures, the S&P 500 fell 0.1%, the Nasdaq declined 0.2% and the Dow Jones was off 0.2%. West Texas Intermediate crude oil traded down 0.7% at $90.49 a barrel, while yields on 10-year US Treasuries slipped to 5.276% in morning action. The VanEck Semiconductor fund (SMH) traded down 0.4% pre-bell. Investors this week look forward to the Wednesday release of minutes of the Federal Reserve's mid-September policy session for clues to the central bank's thinking. Asian exchanges traded higher overnight in holiday-thinned trading, on tech-sector strength and after the soft US jobs report on Friday reduced the outlook for a Federal Reserve rate boost later this month. European bourses generally tracked moderately north midday on the continent, although the CAC 40 index in Paris was down 0.8%. PTC (PTC) shares rose 36% pre-bell after disclosures the US-based software maker will be purchased by the Paris-based Schneider Electric in an all-cash deal valued at $23.7 billion. On the economic calendar is the S&P Global final US September composite purchasing managers index at 9:45 am ET, followed by the ISM Services Index for September at 10 am. In premarket action, Bitcoin traded at $86,007, and spot gold commanded $4,159 an ounce.

BUZZ-Australia's Kelsian shares rise as asset sale triggers Morningstar's cautious optimism

Latest developments on October 7th – Kelsian Group (KLS.AX) shares briefly rose 1% to A$3.93 before narrowing gains to 0.3% by midday in Sydney. Morningstar holds a positive view on the transport operator’s recently announced A$150 million (US$104.76 million) sale of travel assets in mid-September. The investment research firm noted that this divestment relieves the transportation and travel operator from reliance on discretionary-spending businesses such as resorts, cruises, and tours. It also stated that the sale enables management to focus more on core operations and moderately reduces capital intensity. However, Morningstar pointed out that the sale means profits from the marine segment will still be "discretionary in nature." It added that the sale will leave the company’s earnings mainly dependent on its US interstate coach business, which is characterized by short-term contracts without cost-adjustment mechanisms and serves highly volatile sectors such as technology, oil, and gas. Year to date, the share price is down 8.2%. (US$1 = A$1.4318) (For the convenience of non-English speakers, Reuters automatically translates its reports into several other languages.
