US Dollar Mixed Early Friday Ahead of September Employment Report

07:46 AM EDT, 10/02/2026 (MT Newswires) -- The US dollar was mixed against its major trading partners early Friday -- up versus euro and Canadian dollar, down versus the pound and yen -- ahead of the September employment report at 8:30 am ET. Nonfarm payrolls are expected to rise by 90,000 after a jobs gain of 162,000 in August, while the unemployment rate is expected to remain at 4.1% and hourly earnings are forecast to rise by 0.3%. Factory orders data for August are due to be released at 10:00 am ET, at the same time as an appearance by Dallas Federal Reserve President Lorie Logan. The St. Louis Federal Reserve is expected to update its GDP nowcast estimate for Q3 around midday. A quick summary of foreign exchange activity heading into Friday: EUR/USD fell to 1.1235 from 1.1244 at the Thursday US close and 1.1282 at the same time Thursday morning. Eurozone consumer prices rose faster in September than in the previous month, lifting the year-over-year rate, according to data released earlier Friday. The next European Central Bank meeting is scheduled for Oct. 29. GBP/USD rose to 1.3209 from 1.3198 at the Thursday US close but was below a level of 1.3232 at the same time Thursday morning. There are no UK data on Friday's schedule. The next Bank of England meeting is scheduled for Nov. 5. USD/JPY fell to 157.7712 from 158.0851 at the Thursday US close and 157.9542 at the same time Thursday morning. Tokyo CPI, an early indicator of Japanese consumer prices, accelerated in August, according to data released overnight, while the Japanese unemployment rate increased in the same month. The next Bank of Japan meeting is scheduled for Oct. 30. USD/CAD rose to 1.4245 from 1.4228 at the Thursday US close and 1.4244 at the same time Thursday morning. There are no Canadian data on Friday's schedule. The next Bank of Canada meeting is scheduled for Oct. 28.

India's thermal coal supply recovers but replenishment yet to begin, nearly half of power plants face critical inventory shortage

(1) A statement indicates that, so far in October, the average daily coal supply to thermal power plants has increased by 9% compared to last month, while the pace of inventory consumption has also slowed down. (2) India's Ministry of Coal said on Friday that the situation is stabilizing, but restocking of inventories has not yet begun. (3) The ministry stated that in October, the average daily reduction in power plant inventory was 116,000 tons, compared to 243,000 tons in September.
