POLITICS

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said on Thursday she had sent a letter to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen urging the EU to take into account the impact of higher-than-expected inflation on public finances, arguing that automatic increases in spending on pensions and welfare benefits had significantly altered member states' budget outlooks. The issue would be discussed at upcoming Ecofin and European Council meetings, Meloni added.

ECONOMY

ISTAT issues August retail sales data (0800 GMT)

Italy's unemployment rate rose to 6.2% in August while employment levels were little changed during the month, national statistics bureau ISTAT reported on Thursday.

The S&P Global Italy Manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) rose to 50.4 in September from 49.6 in August, the survey showed on Thursday.

Tamoil Italia will introduce a series of measures to help reduce fuel prices across its branded service-station network, responding to appeals from institutions and consumer groups, Italian news agency ANSA reported on Thursday. The measures, aimed at benefiting both consumers and fuel retailers, will remain in force until Oct. 31, 2026.

COMPANIES

ENI ENI.MI

Eni completed the reorganisation of Plenitude's shareholding structure with Ares and EIP in a deal valuing the low carbon unit at €10.75 billion. Following a €1.56 billion capital increase, Eni's stake falls to 65.03%, while Ares and EIP hold 26.24% and 8.73% respectively. The new structure gives Eni and Ares joint control of Plenitude, supports its growth plans and leads to its deconsolidation from Eni's accounts.

STELLANTIS STLAM.MI

New car registrations in Italy rose in September by 9.9% year-on-year to 139,356 vehicles, transport ministry data showed on Thursday.

In the first nine months of the year, registrations were up by 8.7% compared to the same period last year, to 1.27 million units.
