US Dollar Rises Early Thursday Ahead of Busy Data Schedule, Fed Official Appearances

07:35 AM EDT, 10/01/2026 (MT Newswires) -- The US dollar rose against its major trading partners early Thursday ahead of a busy schedule of data releases and appearances by Federal Reserve officials, starting with weekly jobless claims at 8:30 am ET. Manufacturing data for September from S&P Global are due to be released at 9:45 am ET, followed by the ISM's manufacturing report for September and construction spending data for August, both at 10:00 am ET, the same time as an appearance by Fed Governor Christopher Waller. Weekly natural gas stocks data are due at 10:30 am ET and the Atlanta Fed is expected to update its GDP nowcast estimate around midday. Fed Vice Chair Philip Jefferson is scheduled to speak at 1:30 pm ET, followed by Fed Vice Chair for Supervision Michelle Bowman at 3:00 pm ET, and Fed Governor Lisa Cook and New York Fed President John Williams, both at 3:30 pm ET. Earlier Thursday, outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas reported that layoff intentions declined in September, but the technology sector is the leading sector for job losses. Hiring saw its typical seasonal spike in September as companies prepared for the holidays, but the hiring level was the lowest for September since 2011. A quick summary of foreign exchange activity heading into Thursday: EUR/USD fell to 1.1284 from 1.1325 at the Wednesday US close and 1.1358 at the same time Wednesday morning. Eurozone manufacturing PMI rose slightly in September while the Eurozone unemployment rate held steady, data released earlier Thursday showed. European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde is due to speak at 9:30 am ET, followed by ECB policy board member Isabel Schnabel at 11:30 am ET. The next European Central Bank meeting is scheduled for Oct. 29. GBP/USD fell to 1.3215 from 1.3261 at the Wednesday US close and 1.3295 at the same time Wednesday morning. UK home prices fell in September, slowing the year-over-year growth rate, while UK manufacturing rose further above the breakeven point in September, according to data released earlier Thursday. Bank of England policy board member Catherine Mann is due to speak at 8:00 am ET, followed by ECB policy board member Huw Pill at 8:30 am ET. The next Bank of England meeting is scheduled for Nov. 5. USD/JPY rose to 158.1851 from 157.4572 at the Wednesday US close and 157.0391 at the same time Wednesday morning. Japanese manufacturing PMI fell in September but remained in growth territory while Japanese business confidence improved in Q3, according to data released overnight. The next Bank of Japan meeting is scheduled for Oct. 30. USD/CAD rose to 1.4251 from 1.4236 at the Wednesday US close and 1.4178 at the same time Wednesday morning. Canadian manufacturing PMI data for September are due to be released at 9:30 am ET, followed by an appearance by Bank of Canada Senior Deputy Governor Carolyn Rogers at 3:05 pm ET. The next Bank of Canada meeting is scheduled for Oct. 28.
