Trump Says Canada Being Taught 'Lesson', Country Has Treated US 'The Worst' in Trade

06:23 AM EDT, 10/01/2026 (MT Newswires) -- US President Donald Trump said Canada is being "taught a little lesson" as it faces American tariffs, accusing its northern neighbor of treating the US worse than any other country in trade. "Canada has taken advantage of us for so many years, the worst of any country," Trump said at an event at the White House on Wednesday, broadcast on CNBC. Canada took advantage "of our stupid leadership for many, many years," he added. On Monday, Trump said that he believes he can reach a trade agreement with Canada in the coming weeks. On Tuesday, Prime Minister Mark Carney reiterated that Canada remains prepared to negotiate with the US in "good faith." The two countries broke off trade negotiations in August after each accused the other of introducing unacceptable last-minute demands. The US imposed tariffs on specific goods on Aug. 22 and Canada responded with its own levies. Trump subsequently introduced bans on some Canadian alcoholic beverages, dairy products and other imports, which took effect on Tuesday.
