Trump Cools on Diesel Export Ban but Doesn't Rule It Out

MT newswireMT newswire2026/10/01 00:02
08:02 PM EDT, 09/30/2026 (MT Newswires) -- President Donald Trump said he is still "thinking about" banning diesel exports to rein in high energy prices but noted it may have a "negative impact on gasoline," CNBC reported Wednesday, citing remarks in the Oval Office. Trump said his aides think a ban would help diesel "but it might raise the price of other things," according to the report. He said oil prices "are going to start to come down," pointing to a recent rebound in crude exports through the Strait of Hormuz, the report said, adding that his comments appeared to show him cooling to the idea, three days after he said he was considering the move "very seriously." He did not rule it out, and said it is something officials "think about and talk about every day," the report said. Energy Secretary Chris Wright, who appeared with Trump, said diesel prices have fallen in the past week and should drop meaningfully in coming weeks, though he acknowledged supplies are tight, CNBC reported.
