S&P/TSX Composite Index Falls to Two-Month Low in Choppy Trade As Healthcare Sector Shares Tumble

10:46 AM EDT, 09/30/2026 (MT Newswires) -- The S&P/TSX Composite Index dropped to the lowest level in two months mid-morning Wednesday, with shares in the healthcare sector as the weakest performer. The healthcare sector fell 2.4%, led by a decline in Curaleaf (CURA.TO) shares, down 7.5% on last look. The company is mounting a hostile takeover bid for Aurora Cannabis (ACB.TO). The energy sector, boosted by rising oil prices, was 1.3% higher, making it the strongest performer. In stocks, Ag Growth International (AFN.TO) jumped 36% to CA$8.39 per share after it provided an update on its capital strategy. The company statement noted that it is seeing positive market signals across many of its core businesses, as it enters 2027. It expects to generate more than CA$30 million in annualized cost savings. First Quantum (FM.TO) shares fell 31% to CA$31.10 mid-morning. Reuters reported that a Panamanian government commission will recommend restarting the suspended Cobre Panama copper mine through a joint venture with the government. Cobre Panama was closed in November 2023.
