AMC Entertainment reported a jump in attendance in July and August, as blockbuster summer releases such as "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" and Christopher Nolan's "The Odyssey" drove consumers back to the multiplex.
The movie-theater operator on Monday reported estimated attendance of 58.2 million for its two months ended Aug. 31, marking a 36% jump from the year prior. The increase drove revenue 42% higher, with per-person spend from both admissions and concessions rising from last year.
Moviegoers united around blockbusters including "Spider-Man: Brand New Day," which recently became the highest-grossing movie of all time at the domestic box office, having so far earned more than $944.5 million, according to Box Office Mojo. Christopher Nolan's adaptation of "The Odyssey" also broke records, becoming the highest grossing R-rated film of all time, with IMAX extending coveted 70mm screenings through September.
AMC's preliminary report came as the company launched a comprehensive debt refinancing aimed at extending its debt maturities and lowering immediate debt-service burdens.
The Leawood, Kan.-based chain said it is seeking to raise approximately $4 billion in new debt, including a private offering of $2 billion in senior secured notes due 2031, an $850 million first-lien term loan facility, and a $1.12 billion second-lien term loan facility committed by Deutsche Bank AG.
AMC plans to use the proceeds, alongside cash on hand, to repurchase or redeem its 7.5% senior secured notes due in 2029, fully redeem outstanding Muvico notes also due in 2029, and pay off existing credit facilities at both AMC and its European subsidiary, Odeon Cinemas Group, it said in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
