Global bond yields retreated on Thursday, bringing calm to pressured markets. This came after the Federal Reserve raised interest rates, with Waller vowing to curb inflation, while traders awaited the Bank of Japan's decision on Friday. The yield on the 10-year US Treasury fell by 3 basis points to 4.99%, ending an eight-day streak of gains. Yields on Australian and Japanese government bonds of the same maturity declined by 3 basis points and less than 1 basis point, respectively. Byron Anderson, Head of Fixed Income at Laffer Tengler Investments, stated that the Federal Reserve has no choice but to raise rates, otherwise the bond market could face an even larger sell-off; the market narrative is starting to conflict with the Fed, indicating more volatility ahead—a single rate cut cannot stabilize the bond market for long nor solve inflation. Hebe Chen, Market Analyst at Vantage Global Prime, said that for the bond market, this is more likely to cast a long-term shadow rather than a brief storm; short-term yields must factor in the possibility of further tightening by the Fed, while long-term yields are already responding to inflation, large-scale issuance, and fiscal concerns. Even if initial volatility subsides, the pull of higher yields may still remain.
