As of September 12, 2026, CoinGecko’s global crypto searches are being dominated by smaller, highly volatile tokens rather than Bitcoin (BTC).
Pons (PONS), STONK, Hunter Biden’s Laptop (LAPTOP) lead the trending list despite falling in the past 24 hours, while Pearl (PRL) has surged more than 55% in seven days, raising questions over whether trending coins represent an opportunity or simply heightened speculation and risk.
According to the latest CoinGecko Top Trending Cryptocurrencies list, STONK, LAPTOP, and NEAR Protocol (NEAR) are the top three trending crypto assets. In the past 24 hours, STONK, LAPTOP, and NEAR declined approximately 8.0%, 16.2%, and 3.6%, respectively.
Despite the sharp decline, LAPTOP ranks No. 2 among CoinGecko’s most-searched cryptocurrencies, showing that search interest remains high even as its price falls.
There are clear reasons why LAPTOP’s search interest remains high. The launch became a major media event due to the Political Irony. Hunter Biden previously denounced other political memecoins, such as Trump-related tokens, as grifts, before putting his own token tied to one of the most charged symbols of recent U.S. politics.
Volatility is also a reason for searches, as people look at charts, the news, and social talk when a new token is moving violently.
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});Pons, the native token of the Robinhood Chain launchpad, is down about 2.0% in the past 24 hours and about 11.4% in seven days. After surviving aggressive new-listing volatility and a short-term market pullback, PONS has held above its initial hype.
The token peaked at 77 cents on September 4 and currently trades around $0.6309, giving it a strong market capitalization of more than $433 million.
However, the recent declines have indicated that PONS momentum has slowed down from its peak in September and has not gone away. Despite this pullback, its current valuation is still significant, suggesting that the market continues to show interest in it.
In addition, PONS is not just another post-hype collapse, as it is still being positively impacted by the Robinhood Chain launchpad. The key question is whether activity on the launchpad will continue to drive demand after PONS’ initial hype fades.
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});Pearl is up about 55.1% in seven days and by over 23% in 24 hours and is currently trading at $0.59 with a market capitalization of approximately $150 million. The rally is tied to increased attention on Pearl’s model that leverages GPU compute for AI training and inference instead of conventional mining.
In addition, its collaboration with Together AI, continuous network development, and involvement in the AI-crypto narrative are also contributing to its attention. However, PRL’s low daily trading volume of $2 million and small circulating supply may lead to more volatility as traders evaluate the possibility of this rally sustaining itself.
The trending ranking on CoinGecko indicates the coins that users are actively searching for the most. It is not a measure of trading volume, price performance, market capitalisation, liquidity or fundamentals. For investors, a high ranking indicates increasing attention, not necessarily buying pressure, sustainable demand and investment potential.
Current trending lists reveal a shift by traders to smaller, riskier crypto tokens, including launchpad tokens like PONS, political or celebrity memes like LAPTOP, and niche play-by-play tokens like PRL. Their rise over a broader based asset like Bitcoin indicates that there is a growing interest in volatility, narrative and short term gains.
Before buying a trending crypto, investors should check liquidity and trading volume, tokenomics, circulating supply, holder concentration, contract security, project fundamentals, partnerships and active development. Trending status may be a sign of curiosity, panic or speculation and not necessarily buying interest. Thus, investors need to use CoinGecko’s ranking as the initial research step, but not as a direct buy signal.
