AI boom lifts Japan's stock market, Nikkei 225 Index rises 0.35%

On Wednesday, as concerns over escalating tensions in the Middle East were replaced by enthusiasm for artificial intelligence, the Japanese stock market rebounded. The Nikkei 225 Index recently rose by 0.35% after having previously fallen, while the broader TOPIX Index climbed approximately 0.24%. Nomura Securities equity strategist Maki Sawada stated that news of a multi-billion dollar agreement between Verizon and Corning to supply high-density fiber optics for artificial intelligence infrastructure boosted confidence among Japanese cable manufacturers such as Fujitsu. Sawada said, “Semiconductor and artificial intelligence-related stocks performed strongly, making a positive contribution to the Nikkei 225 Index.” In addition, Japanese stocks were influenced by the strengthening yen, as markets expected the Bank of Japan could accelerate interest rate hikes as early as next week’s meeting, with the yen maintaining near a seven-month high. Analysts at Sony Financial Group stated in a report, “Since the market appears to have largely priced in expectations for yen appreciation, once the initial selling momentum eases, market trends are expected to shift toward buying on dips.”
