Volkswagen announced that it will launch a comprehensive reform plan, aiming to cut 50,000 jobs and may even close some factories. This decision was made after prolonged negotiations among management, labor unions, and the Lower Saxony state government in Germany. Volkswagen Group stated on Thursday that this restructuring will be “the most far-reaching transformation plan in the company’s history.” Earlier this year, Volkswagen CEO Oliver Blume put forward a plan that could cut up to 100,000 jobs and close as many as four plants. Volkswagen said that its Supervisory Board has confirmed there is about 500,000 units of excess production capacity in Europe. The company pointed out that its plants in Emden, Zwickau, Hanover, and Neckarsulm currently have no competitive follow-up production projects for the next 5 to 8 years, and said it is simultaneously exploring other uses for these factories. Volkswagen also mentioned that the plan is expected to reduce around 50,000 jobs across the group, including management positions.
