Europe Faces Increased Pressure for Natural Gas Replenishment, Potentially Driving Up Winter Prices

As summer draws to a close, Europe's natural gas buffer inventories remain low, raising the possibility of further intensifying global competition for gas supplies. At current prices, Europe still needs to replenish over 7 billion euros (approximately $8.1 billion) worth of natural gas—more than 100 terawatt-hours (TWh)—in order to reach the minimum 75% storage target. To achieve this, Europe must accelerate inventory replenishment at a pace not seen since the 2022 energy crisis, despite the approach of the season’s end. Goldman Sachs, Rystad Energy, and Morningstar have all warned that this could drive up natural gas prices in winter. "There is indeed a possibility of a 'race for fuels' globally, especially if temperatures are lower than usual during winter," said Go Katayama, Chief LNG Insight Analyst at energy intelligence firm Kpler. If supply disruptions extend into the winter, Europe may have to pay higher prices to ensure scarce LNG cargos are delivered to the continent.

Governor Powell's stance remains unclear and he could become the decisive voter. With less than two weeks until the meeting, the probability of a rate hike is now close to 50/50, and Powell's silence has become a source of uncertainty.
