The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps of Iran stated that two oil tankers caught fire and lost power on Wednesday after striking sea mines in the Strait of Hormuz while attempting to navigate what it called "unauthorized routes." The Revolutionary Guard accused the US military of encouraging ships to deviate from routes deemed legitimate by Iran and warned shipping companies not to utilize unauthorized paths or face further punitive measures.
The Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned attacks targeting multiple countries, calling them a dangerous escalation that could undermine diplomatic efforts toward regional security and stability. It emphasized that Iran should bear full legal responsibility for these actions.
Iran reported that US strikes resulted in 11 deaths, including a nighttime air raid in Khuzestan Province and another attack at a wedding venue in the south. US officials stated that about 100 targets were hit, including Revolutionary Guard air defense positions, radar systems, mine-laying facilities, and anti-ship missile launchers. For the first time, under the "tanker-for-tanker" policy, US forces attacked oil tankers belonging to the Iranian government.
The Revolutionary Guard launched retaliatory strikes against US military assets in Kuwait, Bahrain, Jordan, and Erbil, Iraq. Bahrain intercepted and destroyed several Iranian drones, and a residential area in Kuwait caught fire after a drone strike. The Bahraini military stated that all weapon systems are at the highest level of alert.
The US President denied attempting to force Iran back to the negotiating table, stating a preference for the current military posture. Meanwhile, the UN Secretary-General called for the resumption of negotiations and the full restoration of navigation freedom in the Strait of Hormuz.
Shipping data shows that traffic through the Strait is significantly below average levels, but US officials reported that 17 million barrels of crude oil passed through on Monday, and that multiple anti-ship cruise missiles and drones were intercepted by US forces. The two sides have noticeably different descriptions of actual passage conditions.
