Michael Saylor signals possible Bitcoin purchases as Strategy holds $6.69B liquidity

Michael Saylor, executive chairman of Strategy, indicated that the company may be preparing to recommence Bitcoin acquisitions following a ten-week hiatus. On Sunday, Saylor posted “We’re ₿ack” on X, accompanied by a corporate Bitcoin holdings chart, drawing renewed attention to the firm’s approach to its cryptocurrency portfolio.

Pause in Accumulation and Market Context

While Saylor’s message drew widespread attention, Strategy has not confirmed any new Bitcoin purchase, nor has the company made any official changes to its holdings public. Bitcoin traded near $79,000 at the time, recovering more than 2.5% from the previous Friday’s low. The post fueled market speculation about the company’s possible return to Bitcoin buying at a time when prices have broken above its average cost.

Strategy’s last documented Bitcoin acquisition occurred on June 22, when the enterprise purchased 520 BTC for $34.9 million at an average price of $67,068 per coin. This transaction brought total holdings to 847,363 BTC. However, between June and August, Strategy gradually reduced its position with four separate sales totaling 6,916 BTC. After these transactions, the company’s Bitcoin holdings declined to 840,447 BTC as of August 23, acquired at a total cost of $63.36 billion, with an average acquisition price of $75,385 per Bitcoin.

Strategy now holds 840,447 BTC, representing approximately 4% of Bitcoin’s fixed 21 million supply, maintaining its status as the largest corporate holder in the market.

In the ten weeks since its last purchase, Strategy shifted focus toward strengthening its dollar liquidity instead of expanding its cryptocurrency reserves. The company reported a total liquidity pool of $6.69 billion across its various accounts as of August 24.

Funding Sources and Liquidity Structure

Most of Strategy’s liquidity was raised through share sales rather than cryptocurrency disposals. Between August 17 and August 23, the firm sold 18.26 million MSTR shares, generating roughly $2.01 billion in proceeds. Out of these funds, $136.4 million were used for repurchasing preferred stock, and $300 million were directed to the USD Reserve.

The USD Reserve, amounting to $5.10 billion, is primarily set aside for paying stock dividends and interest. In contrast, the company retains $1.59 billion in a USD Cash account, which is allocated for acquisitions, share repurchases, convertible-note payments, and general treasury purposes.

Mini dictionary: Strategy is a US-based technology company widely recognized for its large-scale Bitcoin holdings and its executive chairman, Michael Saylor, who has driven its digital asset strategy since 2020.

Category Amount Purpose
USD Reserve $5.10 billion Dividends and interest payments
USD Cash $1.59 billion Acquisitions and treasury needs
Total Liquidity $6.69 billion Combined available funds
BTC Holdings 840,447 BTC Corporate treasury

Market Position and Sector Trends

Strategy’s position remains significant, accounting for about 4% of all existing Bitcoin. The company’s recent approach focused on maximizing flexibility for potential acquisitions or managing debt obligations.

During the same period, the broader corporate Bitcoin treasury sector experienced a sharp decline, with the top 50 treasury holders’ combined assets dropping from around $150 billion in July 2025 to $67 billion in August 2026. This pressured the sector, though Strategy maintained its dominant role.

With Bitcoin’s price now above the company’s average acquisition cost, any further purchase would clarify the rationale behind its recent pause and evolving capital strategy. Until an official filing is made, Saylor’s post has simply renewed market speculation regarding Strategy’s next steps.

Only a forthcoming regulatory filing from Strategy will provide confirmation on whether Bitcoin accumulation has genuinely resumed.
