Gold prices have seen strong growth since 2022 as markets reacted to global financial pressures, including US sanctions on Russia. Over the past five years, the XAU/USD index rose from $1,500 to $4,600, marking a significant rally. The trend remains positive, with investors now eyeing a possible move above the $5,000 level. Despite periodic corrections, gold has quickly recovered, maintaining its bullish momentum.
Gold prices could soar to $12,000 if US national debt keeps rising, says strategist
US national debt as a driver for gold
Amid this sustained rise, attention has turned to the impact of the US national debt, which has reached $40 trillion. John LaForge, Chief Alternative Strategist at Ned Davis Research, argued that the ballooning debt could propel gold prices much higher if not addressed.
Speaking to KitcoNews, LaForge stated that continued increases in the US national debt could drive gold well beyond current levels. He suggested that, in the absence of effective government action, the XAU/USD index might surge past $10,000 and potentially reach as high as $12,000.
LaForge pointed to a widespread reluctance among policymakers to tackle debt reduction, which he believes could fuel further gains for gold over the coming years.
“The longer we let it go, and we don’t pay this stuff back, and we keep piling all these debts up, the higher gold prices can go. I think we can still see multiple years of higher prices because I don’t get the sense at all that, globally, politicians and leaders want to deal with it,” said LaForge.
Central banks and institutional demand
LaForge also highlighted the ongoing demand from central banks, institutional funds, and retail investors as a key factor supporting gold’s rally. He emphasized that the metal remains highly attractive among large institutional players, who continue to increase their holdings while US national debt rises.
“This is the biggest tailwind gold has had,” LaForge explained, noting that few lawmakers currently focus on reducing the national debt. He concluded that under these circumstances, gold could potentially double or triple from its current levels.

Gold’s historical performance
Gold remains one of the strongest performing commodities, with prices rising consistently each quarter. The combination of high demand, economic uncertainty, and the expanding US debt continues to reinforce the bullish outlook. Observers have noted that, unless fiscal trends change, gold may see unprecedented gains in the medium to long term.
