Nonprofit consumer advocacy organization Public Citizen reported that US President Donald Trump’s digital asset ventures, as well as those involving his family, have collectively left investors at least $4.7 billion in losses since 2022.

Breakdown of the reported losses

Public Citizen stated that the majority of these losses stemmed from the Official Trump (TRUMP) memecoin, which accounted for $3.2 billion. According to the report, the significant drop in value for TRUMP resulted in substantial losses for late buyers, while a small group of early buyers benefited financially from the price movements.

In addition, the organization identified other projects tied to the Trump family, such as the World Liberty Financial governance token and the president’s nonfungible token (NFT) trading cards, both launched in 2022. However, holders of World Liberty Financial’s USD1 stablecoin reportedly have not experienced significant losses, according to Public Citizen.

Trump Media’s digital asset treasury was also cited as contributing to investor losses, though the report did not specify the precise amount attributed to this arm.

White House response and ethics debate

White House officials have faced ongoing questions about Trump’s crypto-related activities. Spokesperson Anna Kelly has repeatedly stated that there are no conflicts of interest involving the president’s digital asset investments, declining to elaborate further on the nature of these projects.

Public Citizen has emphasized that in the case of the TRUMP memecoin, “the losses represented wealth transferred to a small group of early buyers rather than money that simply vanished.”

No immediate comment was provided by the White House when asked about the reported $4.7 billion in losses tied to these ventures.

Calls for new legislation and regulatory oversight

The advocacy group renewed its call for ethical standards specifically addressing the intersection of politics and crypto assets. Public Citizen urged lawmakers to incorporate ethics requirements in the pending Digital Asset Market Clarity (CLARITY) Act. The organization argued that the president’s private interests and policy decisions remain intertwined, suggesting that any new legislation should explicitly require the president and immediate family members to divest from direct investments in the digital asset industry.

Trump recently met with executives from several crypto companies, encouraging efforts to pass a “fair version” of the CLARITY Act. This bipartisan bill is scheduled for a Senate cloture vote on September 15, which will require support from at least 60 senators to proceed.

Combined with structural pressures such as increased defense spending, an aging population, and AI infrastructure, the upward trend in yields may become a long-term pattern.

For the first time in over a month! U.S. airstrikes Iran's Larak Island, oil prices surge in response

On August 30 local time, the U.S. military launched a new attack on Iran after more than a month, carrying out airstrikes on two Revolutionary Guard facilities on Larak Island. In retaliation, Iran fired missiles towards Jordan. Oil prices surged in response, with Brent crude temporarily exceeding $90 per barrel. Meanwhile, several senior U.S. military commanders warned internally that continued operations against Iran would be unsustainable, as only about a quarter of U.S. Navy destroyers are combat-ready. After six months of conflict between the U.S. and Iran, the situation has reached a stalemate, negotiations have broken down, and both sides are under pressure.
