Due to rising oil prices and the increase in US benchmark Treasury yields, investors are betting that measures by the US Treasury to curb borrowing costs may offer only temporary relief, and Asian stock markets are expected to follow US equities lower. Even though the US Treasury may expand long-term bond buybacks and is about to launch new fiscal plans, the yield on the US 30-year Treasury continues to rise. The S&P 500 index closed down 0.9%, with Walmart posting its biggest drop since 2022 due to lower-than-expected sales. The Nasdaq 100 index fell 0.7%, marking its fifth consecutive day of declines. Stock index futures indicate that Japanese, South Korean, and Australian markets may open lower, while US stock index futures were mostly flat in early trading.
