Ten years and 10 billions USD! Micron Technology increases investment in US memory R&D, Boise campus to begin construction in 2027
Micron has announced the establishment of Micron Research Labs, with a commitment to invest $10 billions over the next decade, focusing on cutting-edge fields such as storage, computing architecture, packaging, and manufacturing. The lab will be located in Boise and construction is set to begin in 2027. This investment is independent from the company’s existing $250 billions commitment and represents an additional increase in R&D efforts.
Micron is pushing the competition in AI storage further into the R&D stage. On August 20, it was reported that Micron Technology announced the establishment of Micron Research Labs, pledging to invest $10 billion over the next decade, focusing on storage technology, advanced computing architecture, packaging processes, and semiconductor manufacturing in cutting-edge fields.
The research lab will be located at Micron’s headquarters in Boise, Idaho, with plans to begin campus construction in 2027. Once completed, it will accommodate several hundred R&D personnel.
This layout is an important step for Micron to further strengthen its U.S.-based R&D capabilities. Notably, the $10 billion special investment is independent of the company’s previously announced commitment of over $250 billion for U.S. manufacturing and R&D, meaning Micron will continue increasing resources on the R&D side beyond its already large-scale domestic investments.
In addition to the core Boise campus, Micron also plans to fund university partnership projects, establish satellite labs globally, and cooperate with industrial and academic partners within its research network, connecting local R&D capabilities with global scientific resources to form an open R&D ecosystem.
As demand for storage and computing power from AI and high-performance computing continues to grow, Micron is extending its R&D focus to underlying technologies such as storage architecture, advanced computing, packaging, and manufacturing processes. The establishment of this research lab also signals the company’s attempt to consolidate its advantage in next-generation storage and computing technology through long-term R&D investment.
