Bitcoin ETF Outflows, Ethereum Inflows: Are Indian Traders Missing a BTC-to-ETH Rotation?

Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs have started exhibiting a diverging trend recently. While Bitcoin ETFs see marginal outflows, Ethereum funds are attracting fresh money, according to the latest reports. This shift has raised a significant question about the investors’ changing sentiment. The market remains divided over whether institutions have begun shifting their focus from Bitcoin to Ethereum.

This picture is important for Indian traders, who tend to prioritize Bitcoin over Ethereum. If ETH continues to attract global institutional interest and outperform BTC, the trend could eventually be mirrored in India as well.

The latest crypto ETF data highlights a clear difference between Bitcoin and Ethereum. Reportedly, Bitcoin ETFs saw net outflows, with Fidelity’s FBTC recording the largest withdrawal at $46.8 million. But reducing this larger negative effect, BlackRock’s IBIT recorded $14.3 million in inflows.

At the same time, Ethereum ETFs moved in the opposite direction. They marked about $7.38 million in net flows, with BlackRock’s ETHA leading the inflows. This indicates that ETH has started attracting institutional funds, overpowering BTC.

Despite this shift, the numbers are still too small. Thus, the shift cannot be considered a major repositioning among institutions as of now. As Bitcoin ETFs have exhibited a remarkable performance since their launch in January 2024, with assets under management at $79 billion, the latest trend cannot undermine the broader institutional demand for them. But if both funds continue to show these contrasting trends in the upcoming weeks, it could provide more clues on whether institutions are actually rotating from BTC to ETH.

Notably, the ETF flows alone cannot determine institutions’ broader preference. These cryptocurrencies’ price performance is a major factor to consider. The BTC and ETH prices over the past few weeks could give a stronger hint on changing investor sentiment.

Recently, ETH has been showing slight signs of strength against Bitcoin. This makes the ETH/BTC ratio an important metric to watch. While BTC is valued at $63,611, with a 1.10% weekly decline, ETH is trading at $1,886, down 0.9%. The current ETH/BTC ratio is 0.0296, meaning 1 ETH is worth about 0.0296 BTC.

The market’s trading volume is also another factor to consider. Currently, Bitcoin’s 24-hour trading volume is at around $22.2 billion; Ethereum registered roughly $7 billion. This indicates that BTC’s trading activity is more than three times higher than that of ETH. Thus, a temporary change in the ETF flows cannot completely determine the demand for BTC or ETH.

If ETH continues to outperform BTC in institutional interest, it could strengthen speculation of a broader rotation. But if the current sentiment around ETH fades and BTC regains momentum, it could provide support for the pioneer cryptocurrency.

It is worth noting that the current difference in the global institutional interest in Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs does not actually define the Indian crypto trading activity. It doesn’t necessarily mean that Indians are also moving away from BTC.

As of now, Bitcoin remains the most preferred digital asset in India. Although Ethereum is also being traded in India, BTC takes priority. As of now, the BTC/INR value is ₹ 60,71,204, and the ETH/INR value is ₹ 1,79,291.

If the ETH/INR volume rises while BTC/INR activity weakens, it may suggest that Indian traders are also following the global trend. However, as of now, Indian traders continue to opt for Bitcoin over Ethereum.
