What If You Invested $1,000 In Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP, and SOL In August 2020?
A thousand dollars split across four major cryptocurrencies in August 2020 would tell four very different stories today. Crypto technologist and investor Paul Barron laid out the numbers in a fresh post on X, and Solana’s performance stands far above the rest.
The Numbers Behind the Comparison
Solana traded near $1.52 in August 2020. It now sits around $77.26. That’s growth of +4,970%, or 50.7x. A $1,000 investment in Solana would now be worth $50,700.
Ethereum grew from about $347 to roughly $1,923, a gain of +455% (5.5x). That same $1,000 becomes $5,550. Bitcoin moved from about $11,811 to around $65,181, growing +452% (5.5x) and turning $1,000 into $5,520. XRP rose from $0.26 to $1.04, a +301% gain (4.0x), turning $1,000 into $4,010.
Barron also compared these figures to the S&P 500. The index moved from about 3,295 to around 7,700 over the same period, a gain of +133.7% (2.34x). A $1,000 investment there grows to $2,337. Every crypto asset in Barron’s breakdown outpaced the index by a wide margin.
Reactions From Investors
That sentiment captures a common theme among long-term crypto holders who chose other assets in 2020.
Richie O took a different angle in his reply, focused on long-term strategy over specific asset performance. He closed his comment with a nod to the classic crypto acronym: “Hold On for Dear Life.”
Why the Gap Matters
The gap between Solana and the other three assets raises questions about network adoption, transaction speed, and developer activity during this period. Solana built a reputation for low fees and fast processing times, factors that likely contributed to its price trajectory.
Ethereum and Bitcoin, as more established networks, grew at a steadier pace. XRP’s growth trailed the others, partly shaped by years of regulatory uncertainty tied to litigation with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.
Barron’s numbers offer a clear illustration of how volatile and divergent crypto asset performance can be over a multi-year period. Two assets with similar starting points, like Ethereum and Bitcoin, produced nearly identical returns. Solana, by contrast, multiplied its value at more than nine times the rate of Bitcoin or Ethereum.
For investors weighing decisions today, the six-year window offers a case study in how early positioning in emerging blockchain networks can produce outsized returns compared to established assets or traditional index funds. The S&P 500 still posted solid gains, but nowhere near the returns crypto investors saw across this specific stretch of time.

LNG exports plunge by 90%: Qatar’s quarterly fiscal deficit hits nearly a ten-year high, with economic contraction expected to exceed 8% this year
Qatar's budget deficit in the second quarter reached approximately $5.8 billion, marking the highest level since the end of 2016 and nearly double that of the previous quarter. Following the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, Qatar's liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports plummeted from about 20 million tons per quarter in the same period last year to less than 2 million tons during April to June 2026. According to the IMF, Qatar's economy is expected to contract by more than 8% this year.
