(1) Persistent high temperatures and drought in Europe have caused water levels in the Danube and Rhine rivers to fall to historic lows, with temperatures in some regions exceeding 40°C. Commercial shipping has been forced to reduce loads, some river segments are blocked, and supply chain tensions are spreading across multiple countries. (2) The Rhine river’s Kaub water gauge in Germany is expected to drop into single digits for the first time; this section is one of the shallowest areas in central Rhine. The German Federal Association of Inland Navigation has warned that if levels fall further, commercial freight and cruise navigation will become impossible, effectively dividing the Rhine into southern and northern segments. (3) Restrictions on shipping directly affect the transport of grain, fuel, coal, and industrial raw materials. Companies are turning to rail or road alternatives, but these have higher costs and limited capacity, meaning industries such as chemicals and steel face risks of delayed delivery of raw materials. (4) The energy sector is also under pressure. Hungary’s nuclear power plant is seeing cooling systems affected by reduced river water, while high temperatures have pushed up air conditioning demand, putting both supply and demand under strain in the power system. (5) Low water levels are also revealing wreckage of sunken WWII German warships and remnants of ancient Roman bridges, with some wrecks possibly containing unexploded ordnance; professional teams are required to assess and handle these risks. (6) Data from European drought monitoring agencies show that, since mid-June, drought conditions in Central and Western Europe have worsened. Global weather attribution research indicates that human-driven climate change has made extreme evaporation conditions about 80 times more likely in Western Europe, exacerbating drought outcomes amid scarce rainfall. (7) North Rhine-Westphalia and three other German federal states have eased truck transport restrictions to alleviate materials flow pressures, but without sustained rainfall, the low water levels in the Danube and Rhine are unlikely to reverse soon, posing ongoing threats to regional trade, agriculture, and ecosystems.
