(1) ING analyst Francesco Pesole stated that if US inflation data released this Wednesday comes in below market expectations, the EUR/USD exchange rate may rise above 1.16. He noted that after last Friday's weak US nonfarm payrolls report, there is still ample room for the market to lower its expectations for future Federal Reserve rate hikes. (2) In contrast, the European Central Bank has made a "quasi-commitment" to another rate hike in September, which further supports the euro's performance. (3) Pesole emphasized, "The role of short-term interest rate differentials as the main driving factor for EUR/USD continues to strengthen," meaning the euro's sensitivity to Federal Reserve policy developments will remain high. After touching a seven-week high of 1.1580 last Friday, EUR/USD was flat at $1.1559 on Monday.
