⑴ To evade attacks by Houthi militants, an increasing number of oil tankers entering the Red Sea to load Saudi crude are choosing to display the Suez Canal and Egyptian ports as their destination, rather than directly labeling Saudi loading ports, in order to obscure their true sailing intentions. ⑵ Taking the oil tanker “Sea Majesty” as an example, when the vessel approached the Suez Canal, changes in its draft data suggested it secretly loaded oil after shutting off its tracking signal in the Red Sea. Satellite and shipping data analysis confirmed the cargo was actually loaded at Yanbu Port. ⑶ The ship consistently marked its destination as Egypt’s Ain Sokhna Port rather than Saudi Arabia. As an important storage and pipeline hub supporting the Suez Canal, Ain Sokhna sees a wide variety of vessels, covering Russian oil and daily consumer goods among many types of cargo. This high degree of mixing makes it less likely to become a focus for Houthi militants. ⑷ This kind of “destination disguise” operation reflects the profound reshaping of crude oil trade logistics by geopolitical risks. Shipowners and charterers are increasingly forced to weigh the trade-off between secure transit and information transparency, and further normalization of similar covert shipping methods may follow.
