ONE COPY-PASTE JUST COST SOMEONE $100K, AND THE TRAP WAS SET 66 DAYS EARLIER A victim sent funds by copying a wallet address straight from their transaction history, and lost $100K instantly. The stolen funds were converted to roughly 52.8 ETH and moved on. Here's what makes this scam genuinely unsettling, the attacker didn't hack anything. Weeks before the theft, they sent a tiny "dust" transaction from a lookalike address, one sharing the same first and last characters as the victim's real recipient, deliberately planting it in the wallet's history. Wallets and explorers typically truncate addresses, showing only the start and end, so the poisoned entry looked identical at a glance. The victim didn't fall for anything unusual, they did what most people do, trusted their own transaction history. This isn't rare either. Similar attacks have drained $50M and $12.25M from other victims this year alone, and researchers have tracked over 270 million poisoning attempts across Ethereum and BNB Chain since 2022. Blockchain transactions are irreversible, once it's sent, there's no undo button, no bank to call. The only real defense, never copy an address from history, always verify the full string character by character, or use an address book with saved, verified contacts.
