$XAUT Gold is having a moment worth paying attention to. After sitting flat Thursday, price came back strong Friday and pushed to fresh highs, with spot gold up about 2% near $4,325 an ounce. XAU/USD sits around $4,322, a seven week high, putting this week on pace to be the strongest since January. A lot of this comes from geopolitics mixing with shifting rate expectations. Price broke out of the range it had been stuck in for a month, helped by news that Iran and Oman were getting closer to some kind of understanding over the Strait of Hormuz shipping route. Oil eased off on that news, which calmed inflation worries and pulled the dollar and yields lower as traders backed off bets on more Fed hikes. Gold tends to do well in that kind of setup. That said, reports of renewed activity near the Strait on Friday are a reminder things aren't fully resolved there, so the underlying tension hasn't gone away, it's just eased a bit. Rate expectations explain a good chunk of this move too. Markets are now pricing in about a 55 percent chance of a September hike, down from around 67 percent a week ago. Everyone's watching the jobs report today, with expectations around 80,000 added jobs versus 57,000 in June. Some analysts are leaning softer, closer to 65,000. A soft print likely helps gold extend higher, while a strong surprise could pull it back. Technically, price broke above the trendline capping it since April, holding above the moving average near $4,084 and through the upper band around $4,256. RSI sits in the mid 60s, firm but not stretched yet. Upside resistance sits near $4,390, then $4,600. Support sits at $4,256, then $4,223, then $4,084, with a firmer floor near $4,000. Silver has actually outpaced gold, up over 4.5 percent to $64.34, with the gold to silver ratio dropping to 67.00 from 68.92, a sign relative strength is picking up across metals.
