According to Jinse Finance APP, Richmond Federal Reserve President Tom Barkin stated that if U.S. debt continues to rise, there will eventually be a "reckoning," but it's hard to know when such a situation might occur. When asked about the total U.S. public debt exceeding $40 trillion, Barkin said that as long as the public continues to purchase Treasury bonds, the government can continue borrowing. However, he added that investors could eventually begin to resist further lending, which carries certain risks.

"Over time, this matter will ultimately face a reckoning. But no one can tell you exactly when that will happen," Barkin said at an event in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Tuesday. "We have the global currency, the rule of law—these are reasons people continue to buy our bonds. But you know, one day people will stop buying your bonds, and that's the risk that exists."

Barkin reiterated remarks he made earlier this month, laying out the case for keeping interest rates steady as evidence of declining inflation emerges, while also acknowledging that if price pressures persist, officials might have to raise rates.

The Federal Reserve maintained rates unchanged at July’s fifth meeting, despite three officials voting against and favoring a 25 basis points rate hike. Barkin, who does not have voting rights this year, said it’s difficult to judge the extent to which rates are impacting the economy.

After the event, Barkin told reporters that July’s rate decision was a "close call". He explained that one reason for delaying a rate adjustment is that officials will have two more months of economic data before the next policy meeting on September 15-16.

"So far, we’ve gotten one full set of data, and we’re about to get another, so we’ll see what we can learn from all of that," Barkin said.

Policymakers from around the world will gather later this week in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, for the Kansas City Fed’s annual economic symposium. Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Walsh is scheduled to speak on Friday and faces pressure to address criticism that he has not been sufficiently transparent about his economic views.

Barkin said the latest trade dispute with Canada has added to uncertainty around how tariffs will affect prices and the economy. "I don’t think the Canada situation itself will have any major impact on America’s position, but I do think whether we have a sense of what tariff rates will ultimately be—that’s a bigger issue, and I haven’t received any signals regarding that," he said.
