Cboe and S&P DJI discuss tokenized options to boost onchain derivatives

Cboe Global Markets and S&P Dow Jones Indices are in talks to introduce tokenized options contracts, a move that could extend one of the world’s largest derivatives markets further into the blockchain ecosystem.

Tokenization efforts gather pace

The discussions follow a series of recent steps by S&P Dow Jones Indices (S&P DJI) to increase the accessibility and flexibility of the S&P 500 index. In March, S&P DJI licensed the S&P 500 to Trade[XYZ] for an officially recognized perpetual contract on the Hyperliquid platform. This partnership allows certain non-U.S. traders to access leveraged exposure to the S&P 500 with round-the-clock trading, operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Tokenized options could move the traditional model of market structure entirely onto the blockchain, rather than simply creating digital representations of existing assets. Such a transition would represent a major shift in how both traditional and digital market participants interact with key financial instruments.

Cboe’s central role in S&P 500 derivatives

Cboe, a leading global exchange operator, remains central to the S&P 500 derivatives market. Its flagship SPX options, which are cash-settled and designed in the European style, offer broad exposure to the S&P 500. These contracts recently registered more than 22 million open interest contracts, highlighting strong demand and deep liquidity.

Shifting a portion of these operations to blockchain infrastructure could introduce new features, such as continuous settlement and programmable collateral, as well as expanding trading hours, potentially aligning the options market more closely with the nonstop pace familiar to cryptocurrency traders.

Mini dictionary: Hyperliquid is a decentralized derivatives exchange supporting permissionless trading in spot and perpetual contracts, known for its high-speed infrastructure and 24/7 trading availability.

Industry-wide transformation and ongoing collaborations

S&P DJI’s initiatives extend beyond its work with Cboe. Previously, the index provider partnered with Centrifuge, a decentralized finance (DeFi) platform, to bring the S&P 500 benchmark to blockchain-based investment products. According to S&P DJI, tokenization supports real-time, programmable, and potentially uninterrupted index exposure.

The S&P 500 underpins more than $1 trillion in daily trading activity across futures, options, exchange-traded funds (ETFs), and various structured financial products. Even incremental movement of this activity onto digital infrastructure could have far-reaching implications for global markets.

S&P DJI described tokenization as opening pathways to real-time, programmable, and possibly around-the-clock index trading for institutional and retail participants alike.

Tokenization has been gaining traction across the broader market. Weekly trading volumes for tokenized stocks have recently neared $3 billion, while the New York Stock Exchange is developing its own platform to support continuous trading in tokenized securities.

Platform Asset Type Trading Hours Recent Volume/Interest
Cboe SPX Options Traditional Exchange 22 million open contracts
Hyperliquid SPX Perpetuals 24/7 Not disclosed
Tokenized-stock market Equities (Tokenized) 24/7 $3 billion weekly

The momentum behind blockchain adoption in financial markets suggests that integrating tokenized options could mark a further step toward fully digital, globally accessible derivatives trading infrastructure.

30-year US Treasury yield hits highest level since 2002, sell-off may continue under seasonal pressure

On Tuesday, the US 30-year Treasury yield rose to 5.62%, reaching its highest level since 2002, while the 10-year yield briefly touched 5.29%. High oil prices intensifying inflation expectations, robust economic data supporting rate hike expectations, concerns about fiscal sustainability, and a surge in corporate bond supply have collectively driven this round of sell-off. Historical seasonality indicates that September and October are typically the weakest months for US Treasuries, and volatility risk remains high going forward.
