Bitcoin’s Quantum-Resistance Roadmap Is Taking Shape

Bitcoin’s quantum-resistance roadmap is moving toward protocol design, as researchers examine how two proposals could help protect funds before quantum computers threaten exposed public keys.

The concern centers on Bitcoin’s elliptic-curve signatures. A sufficiently powerful quantum computer could use Shor’s algorithm to derive a private key from a visible public key, allowing an attacker to spend the associated coins.

That exposure affects early Pay-to-Public-Key outputs and funds held at addresses whose public keys previous spending has revealed. Transactions can also reveal keys while awaiting confirmation, creating a shorter possible attack window.

These exposure periods help explain why the roadmap separates protecting stored funds from replacing transaction signatures.

BIP-360 remains a draft proposal. Its P2MR output would commit funds to a Merkle root, reducing long-term public-key exposure while providing a structure for future quantum-resistant signatures.

However, P2MR alone would not protect against attacks during the period when spending reveals a vulnerable key. Its role is to create an upgrade path, with additional signature rules to address the remaining risk.

SHRINCS could supply such a signature mechanism. Blockstream Research’s proposal relies on SHA-256 and combines two signing paths under one public key.

For spending, its compact, stateful signatures start at 324 bytes, requiring wallets to track signing history. If that history disappears after a backup restoration, a larger, stateless signature provides a recovery path.

This design addresses the competing demands of transaction size and wallet recovery. Nevertheless, SHRINCS remains experimental, with its formal security proof and independent review incomplete.

Even with suitable cryptography, users would need time and compatible tools to move coins before a cryptographically relevant quantum computer threatens existing keys.

Exchanges, custodians and wallet providers would need to coordinate that transition. A large-scale migration could increase demand for limited block space, raise transaction fees and complicate transfers from institutional custody arrangements.

For traders and investors, the unresolved issue is whether Bitcoin can migrate billions of dollars in exposed funds safely without disrupting access or network activity. The proposals, therefore, concern advanced preparation. Their value depends on completing security research, securing network support, and enabling migration before quantum capabilities create an urgent threat.
