Novo Nordisk (NVO.US) renamed to "Novo" for a fresh start—Can multi-line breakthroughs dispel the shadow over its stock price?

Danish pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk (NVO.US) has launched a comprehensive rebranding centered around the shorter name "Novo." The company will use "Novo" in daily brand promotion, but its legal name will remain Novo Nordisk A/S.

According to Zhitong Finance APP, Danish pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk (NVO.US) is launching a comprehensive rebranding centered around the shorter name "Novo" as its new brand core. The company will use "Novo" for daily brand promotion, while its legal name remains Novo Nordisk A/S. The original name traces back to the 1989 merger of Novo Terapeutisk Laboratorium and Nordisk Insulinlaboratorium. The renaming is based on the slogan "Lasting Health Starts Now" and aims to bring Novo Nordisk's research closer to consumers' daily lives.

Novo Nordisk also introduced "The Novo Way," a corporate culture framework founded on customer focus, competitiveness, clarity, care, and integrity. These principles are designed to simplify decision-making in an increasingly competitive, consumer-driven market. Direct-to-consumer channels account for about 30% of injectable GLP-1 sales and 90% of Wegovy tablet sales.

Novo Nordisk is currently facing fierce competition from rival Eli Lilly. According to Q2 IQVIA data cited by Eli Lilly, the American company controls 60.9% of the obesity market, while Novo Nordisk holds only 38.8%. Novo Nordisk has responded by lowering cash prices, expanding direct sales, and refocusing on obesity, diabetes, and related cardiovascular and metabolic diseases.

The oral Wegovy launch has been a major highlight, with U.S. prescriptions surpassing 3 million within five months. Second quarter sales reached 3.2 billion Danish kroner (about $494 million), but only met expectations.

Meanwhile, Novo Nordisk's next-generation injectable, CagriSema, once again lagged behind Eli Lilly's Zepbound in recent comparisons. The oral market is also growing crowded, with Structure Therapeutics' Aleniglipron achieving up to 16% weight loss in extended studies.

Novo Nordisk shares recorded their worst weekly performance since February last week, down about 12% year to date, after a significant sell-off in 2025 resulted in the worst annual performance since 1984. Pre-market on Monday, the stock fell another 0.4%.

Additionally, Novo Nordisk has decided to stop two trials involving the experimental cardiovascular drug Ziltivekimab due to a "low probability of demonstrating meaningful benefits." This move comes shortly after a late-stage trial failure in July, bringing the total discontinued Ziltivekimab studies to three and weakening Novo Nordisk's efforts to establish a major growth engine beyond diabetes and obesity.

At the same time, it's worth noting that China recently approved Wegovy for metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH), making it the first GLP-1 receptor agonist approved for this liver disease in China. On August 27, 2026, the National Medical Products Administration of China officially accepted Novo Nordisk's marketing application for the oral version of Wegovy.

The head of J.P. Morgan China's healthcare research division expects sales of GLP-1 therapies for weight management in China could reach 30 billion yuan over the next five to seven years, far higher than the current estimate of 3 to 4 billion yuan.

Additionally, Wegovy has reported encouraging results in children aged six to under twelve. After 68 weeks, 40.4% of treated participants were no longer classified as obese compared to 0% in the placebo group. These results pave the way for semaglutide's pediatric obesity indication approval, whereas Eli Lilly's Zepbound has yet to cover this field.

Prior to the rebranding, the company, led by CEO Lars Fruergaard Jørgensen, underwent a broader restructuring. He took over as CEO in August 2025. Novo Nordisk subsequently announced layoffs of about 9,000 employees, representing 11% of its workforce, targeting annual savings of 8 billion Danish kroner by the end of 2026.

How do retail traders view Novo Nordisk? On Stocktwits, retail sentiment toward Novo Nordisk shifted from "bearish" a week ago to "bullish," with a "high" volume of mentions.

One user commented: "$NVO changed from Novo Nodisk to Novo. This will definitely drive up the stock price. The next rebranding will go from NoVo to NoGo."

Another user said: "$NVO Not bragging, but every month I buy another 1,000 shares at this price. That’s how confident I am. If it were 2024 or 2025, I’d agree with the bearish logic. But since the oral Wegovy launch, the data has consistently exceeded expectations, and they’ve raised guidance for two straight quarters. Next quarter’s outcome is obvious."
