A simple way to judge who holds the upper hand in the AI hardware sector is to see who is shouldering the financial risk.Memory: Clients are financing suppliers. Micron's clients, through 26 long-term supply agreements, have committed to providing it with $32 billion, mainly paid as cash prepayments. Of this, $12.7 billion has already been recorded on Micron's balance sheet. The same goes for lasers. Lumentum agreed to pay AXT a $43.5 million prepayment just to reserve indium phosphide wafers. But as we move downstream along the supply chain to AI chips, the situation changes dramatically.Broadcom is backing up to $29 billion in lease payments for a single client.NVIDIA has provided up to $105 billion in guarantees for land, power, and main structures for a data center construction project with OpenAI.pb: As reported last week, Broadcom's Wall Street syndicate is raising $60 billion in financing for companies such as Anthropic. In my view, this shows who really holds the bargaining power. For scarce memory and materials, clients prepay to secure supply. For AI computing power, suppliers are helping clients with financing so they can keep building.Of course, this analogy isn’t entirely accurate: the buyers receiving financing support include continually loss-making AI labs, while I guess Micron’s clients are probably much stronger financially. When a memory supplier can demand clients prepay billions of dollars in cash for capacity, that shows where the true scarcity lies.

BUZZ - UBS downgrades AppFolio to “neutral,” stock price falls in response

On October 7th, the real estate software company AppFolio (APPF.O) saw its shares drop by 6.6% to $189.87 on Wednesday, after UBS downgraded its rating from "Buy" to "Neutral," citing slower unit growth and a more balanced risk-reward ratio. The brokerage raised its price target by $20 to $220, while LSEG data shows the Wall Street median price target at $230.81. UBS stated that a tightening multifamily housing market, rising interest rates, and financing constraints could slow user growth, thus lowering the expected FY2027 average revenue per user (ARPU) growth from 6.3% to 5.5%. UBS added that AppFolio's AI and value-added services may still provide upside potential, but product adoption appears to be in the early stages, and client feedback on some services has been mixed. UBS notes that the target price increase is based on raising the FY2028 enterprise value/free cash flow (EV/FCF) multiple from 16x to 18.5x, stating, "Given its higher growth potential, this valuation still remains slightly above re-rated industry peers." Out of ten analysts, eight have a "Strong Buy" or "Buy" rating, while two rate it "Hold." The stock's decline means it is down about 18% year-to-date, significantly underperforming the S&P 400 Software & Services Index's 25% gain.
