U.S. President Trump is expected to announce a plan on Wednesday for approximately $200 billion in South Korean-supported U.S. energy projects, involving eight large nuclear power plants, major power generation facilities in Texas, and an Alaskan liquefied natural gas (LNG) export project.

According to Zhitong Finance APP, U.S. President Trump is expected to announce on Wednesday a plan for U.S. energy projects supported by South Korea, totaling about $200 billion, involving eight large nuclear power plants, a major power generation facility in Texas, and the Alaska LNG (liquefied natural gas) export project. These will be among the first projects to receive support under the U.S.-Korea trade agreement framework reached last year.

According to White House officials, Trump plans to announce the related arrangements on Wednesday afternoon in the Oval Office. Last year, South Korea committed to investing $350 billion in the U.S. as part of the U.S.-Korea trade agreement, of which $150 billion was earmarked for shipbuilding and another $200 billion for strategic investments. The projects to be announced this time are also expected to include new investment commitments.

However, the South Korean government has not yet publicly confirmed the specific content of the plan Trump intends to announce. In its earlier report to the National Assembly, South Korea listed the Texas power generation project as a priority, while the eight large nuclear reactors and the Alaska LNG project were still marked as requiring further negotiations, indicating that some aspects of the project arrangements between the U.S. and South Korea still need coordination.

According to the proposed financing plan, South Korea's support will be directed toward eight large nuclear power plants as well as a large power generation facility planned for construction in Encinal, Texas. The South Korean government had previously designated the Encinal gas combined-cycle power generation project as a priority project under its strategic investment plan in the U.S.

The Alaska LNG Project Expected to Receive Korean Financial Support

The Alaska LNG project is one of the most high-profile projects in this plan. Previous reports indicate that South Korea's support for the project could reach about $54 billion.

This long-planned major energy project aims to transport natural gas from Alaska's North Slope to the southern part of the state, with some of the gas used for local power generation needs, and the remainder to be liquefied and exported to Asian markets.

However, due to the large investment scale and technical complexity, the project has long faced questions regarding financing and commercial viability. It requires building a large natural gas pipeline across Alaska, as well as the necessary liquefaction and export facilities. Recent estimates indicate that total investment may be in the range of $44.5 to $54.5 billion.

Private company Glenfarne Group, responsible for developing the project, has signed preliminary agreements with multiple potential LNG importers, but the project has not yet reached a final investment decision. Support from South Korean funds could be a key factor in moving the project past this critical threshold.

Trump has consistently promoted the Alaska LNG project and has sought to attract foreign capital and long-term supply contracts to strengthen the project's financing and commercial viability.

The $350 Billion U.S.-Korea Investment Commitment Begins Implementation

This $200 billion project plan originates from the U.S.-Korea trade agreement reached last year. According to the arrangement, South Korea agreed to invest $350 billion in the U.S. in exchange for the U.S. reducing tariffs on Korean goods from 25% to 15%. $150 billion of this was earmarked for shipbuilding cooperation, and $200 billion for strategic investments.

Therefore, this planned $200 billion is not an additional investment beyond the original $350 billion commitment, but rather a specific allocation of the strategic investment portion agreed upon previously.

According to the South Korean government’s previously released plan, the major gas power project in Texas, eight large nuclear reactors, and the Alaska LNG project are all within the scope of bilateral discussions. However, the South Korean side has emphasized that specific projects must undergo commercial feasibility evaluations before investment arrangements are confirmed.

The Trump Administration Seeks to Promote U.S. Energy Investments

White House spokesperson Taylor Rogers stated that these projects are aimed at advancing the Trump administration’s policy goals of expanding U.S. energy production, developing Alaska’s energy resources, and promoting the U.S. nuclear industry.

Meanwhile, the announcement of the related investment plans comes as the United States approaches the November midterm elections. Living costs and economic performance have become key issues for voters, and the Trump administration has recently focused on announcing a series of investment projects and economic policy achievements.

If South Korea’s support for nuclear power, the Texas power facility, and the Alaska LNG project is ultimately implemented, it will mark the beginning of substantial progress in fulfilling the large-scale investment commitments of last year’s U.S.-Korea trade agreement. However, since the South Korean government has not yet confirmed all details of the projects the U.S. intends to announce, the final investment scale, financing methods, and implementation timeline of some projects remain to be clarified by both sides.
