- Fed decision night: a hike is almost fully priced
The three major indexes fell again Tuesday (Dow −0.63%, S&P −0.45%, Nasdaq −0.78%) as the 10-year Treasury yield briefly hit 5.047%, the highest since 2007. CME FedWatch puts the odds of a 25bp hike Wednesday (lifting the target range from 3.50%–3.75%) at about 94.5%. Chair Kevin Warsh’s press conference will decide whether the move is a “sell-the-news” event or a more hawkish path.
🎯 Beneficiaries: XLE, XOM, CVX; Key catalyst: 2:00pm ET decision + dot plot; energy was the only sector higher Tuesday. - Huang and Trump push back on the “slow AI down” narrative
After Anthropic, OpenAI and xAI called over the weekend for a slower pace on frontier models, the PHLX Semiconductor Index slumped nearly 6% Monday. On Tuesday SOX closed +0.40%, with Qualcomm up about 4.3%, AMD about 2.2%, and Nvidia +0.57% to $212.17. At the All-In Summit, Jensen Huang and President Trump both framed “AI doomsday” talk as a hoax and said the U.S. data-center and AI race should not stop.
🎯 Beneficiaries: NVDA, QCOM, AMD; Key catalyst: volume rebound as the safety scare fades; watch tech into the Fed print. - OpenAI in talks on a $1.2 trillion funding round
The FT and others report investors have opened early talks on a new private raise that could value OpenAI at about $1.2 trillion, up from $852 billion after the $122 billion March round. Altman still says there will be no IPO in 2026. Capital keeps flowing into compute and cloud contracts rather than a public listing.
🎯 Beneficiaries: MSFT, NVDA, AMZN; Key catalyst: a higher private mark reconfirming cloud and chip order expectations. - Altera files confidentially for IPO; Intel’s 49% stake enters a re-rating window
Altera, owned 51% by Silver Lake and 49% by Intel, confidentially filed an S-1 on Tuesday. Prior reports pointed to a raise of more than $2 billion and a possible listing this year. The company sells programmable chips into data centers, industrial automation and robotics. Intel popped more than 3% intraday before closing about 0.5% lower.
🎯 Beneficiaries: INTC, AVGO; Key catalyst: the public filing disclosing hyperscaler exposure and AI revenue mix. - Oil jumps again; energy is the only clean risk-off bid
With Saudi Arabia’s East-West pipeline shut and Houthi attacks in focus, WTI rose about 4.4% to $105.83 and Brent about 2.9% to $108.75. Energy gained roughly 2.3% Tuesday; Chevron was among the Dow’s best names. Higher crude also tightens the link between inflation and the hike narrative.
🎯 Beneficiaries: XOM, CVX, COP; Key catalyst: whether Middle East supply risk keeps supporting energy relative strength after the Fed. - Apple RF chain: SWKS surges more than 13% as the Qorvo deal nears the finish line
Skyworks jumped about 13.6%, reversing Monday’s roughly 10% drop, on reports of stronger Apple handset component demand and progress toward the ~$22 billion merger with Qorvo. RF front-end names are high-beta plays on on-device AI and the new iPhone cycle.
🎯 Beneficiaries: SWKS, QRVO, AAPL; Key catalyst: merger-approval milestones and Apple build-cycle confirmation.
Trading note: Tonight’s driver is the Fed decision and the dots, not a single earnings print. Flows are toggling between “priced-in hike + oil inflation” and “AI narrative repair.” Chips have bounced off the washout but remain capped by a 5% Treasury yield; energy is relatively stronger, while crypto names are still digesting the Senate’s failure to advance the Clarity Act. Size positions and watch Treasuries and Nasdaq futures after the statement.
