US Treasury August Budget Deficit Smaller Than Expected, Narrower Than Year Ago

02:03 PM EDT, 09/11/2026 (MT Newswires) -- The US Treasury posted a $166.80 billion budget deficit in August compared with the $211.1 billion deficit expected in a survey compiled by Bloomberg and smaller than the $344.79 billion budget deficit a year earlier. The monthly deficit was $291.14 billion in July. Through the first eleven months of the fiscal year, the deficit was $1.966 trillion, down from $1.973 trillion in the same period a year ago.
